Horticulture 1
Instructor: Mr. Jason Chester (704) 278-9233
Course Description:
Horticulture 1 is designed to introduce you to the various areas of the horticulture industry. We will study economics of horticulture, plant ID, employability skills, record keeping, soil science, and many other areas of the horticulture industry. This is a very hands-on class where students will be involved with the operation of a production greenhouse and design of numerous plant beds around campus. One of the major benefits of being enrolled in this course is the opportunity to be a member of the FFA. Every student is required to the join the FFA and encouraged to take advantage of all it has to offer YOU!!! Dues are $15. You will also be required to design a project related to the agricultural industry. This type of project is known as a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Project. This project will be a part of the grading process.
Class Expectations:
1.) All students are expected to respect the teacher, fellow classmates, and the school equipment. 2.) All students are expected to be in their seat ready to begin class when the tardy bell rings. 3.) All students will remain quiet during announcements and when the teacher is talking. 4.) All students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that is considered to be safe by the teacher for themselves and others. 5.) Lab activities, field trips, etc… are a part of classroom instruction. All students are expected to stay with the class at all times. Leaving the class without prior approval from the teacher is considered skipping class. 6.) All students are expected the follow the rules of West Rowan High School and Rowan Salisbury Schools. 7.) All students are expected to learn while having FUN!!!
We are all going to have a GREAT time in Horticulture 1, however for those who fail to meet these expectations will face the following consequences:
Step 1: Conference with teacher – This may involve time after school Step 2: The teacher will contact the student’s parent/guardian about behavior. Step 3: The student will be referred to the administration
Other items: -The absence and tardy policy for the school is in effect. -Students may want to bring an extra change of clothes because of the dirty nature of working in a greenhouse or in planting beds, not being prepared for working outdoors is not a valid excuse for not participating in class assignments.
Grading Procedures: Chapter Tests: 35% Quizzes: 15% Lab Activities: 10% Projects: 20% SAE 20%

-During this semester in our greenhouse we will mainly be producing pansies and poinsettias for sale and working on campus beautification projects. Students will assume complete control of the planting and maintaining of a flowerbed on campus. The majority of this project will be during normal class time, however consistent participation will be required to receive an acceptable grade.
I look forward to an exciting year! Jason Chester-Ag. Teacher |
