Welcome to a new year of art at Mulberry and North Wilkesboro Elementary schools. The shorter school year and longer school days have had an impact on the art schedule. At Mulberry, art classes are longer-50 minutes. At North Wilkesboro, we are trying shorter (30 minute) classes which meet twice a week. The additional art time will give us opportunities to create more complex and detailed art work. As always, art projects are designed to integrate with classroom studies and help students make connections between subject areas. For the first month of school, while I am learning all of their names, kindergarteners will be learning about colors and shapes and lines. First graders will also be working with lines, patterns and shapes. We will also be working on fine motor skills including drawing, painting, cutting and glueing. Second graders will use lines to make patterns and designs, work on folding skills with origami, and cutting out spirals and other more complex shapes. Third graders will be exploring radial designs in several projects. Science concepts will be reinforced as students make projects about reptiles, birds, and amphibians. Fourth graders and fifth graders will start off by learning some drawing techniques and skills. Students this age want to be able to draw more realistically, so we will be introducing some ways to show proportion, detail and perspective in drawings.
