August 31-Sept. 4th
This week we will begin to learn the letters of the alphabet. We will learn to recognize Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, Nn. This is simply an introduction. We will cover the letters in more detail in a few weeks, along with learning the sounds they make.
In Math, we will be sorting objects. We will sort by color, size, and shape.
On Monday, I will send home a homework pack for the week. Thank you for keeping up with your child's homework each night. It is making a difference for them.
Thank you to all who are volunteering your time to help out in the classroom. I have had several parents contact me about wanting to help. It is so great to have the pages and supplies I need already made without me having to take the items home. You are so wonderful. Thanks again.
Thank you also for being concerned about your child's behavior at school. We are working on behavior as a class. Believe me this is a good class we just have a few areas we are trying to fine tune. Checking the folder each day and discussing the behavior with your child is helping so much.
Mrs. Cook
I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at anytime. You can call me at school at 358-2658, or send me a note in your childs daily folder or email me at cherylc@autaugacountyschool.org.
Parent Participation
Throughout the school year there will be a variety of special classroom activities and celebrations. I encourage you to attend these functions when possible and to support them by sending needed supplies. Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school.
School Attendance
Your childs regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. I cannot emphasize this point enough. Most kindergarten learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Therefore, it is next to impossible to make up work at home. Please view school as a priority, and see to it that your child attends everyday except in cases of illness or emergency. When your child does miss school, you have THREE days to send a note or he/she will be marked as unexcused.
Changes in Transportation
If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus or you wish for your child to ride a different bus than usual, you must send a written note. Do not rely on your child to tell me this information, because children often become confused and relay messages incorrectly. If a written note is not received your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation. You can call the office at 358-2658, for last minute changes in transportation and they will be announced at the end of the day.
Money
On occasion it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. Always send money in a sealed envelope with the following information written on it:
1. Your childs first and last name.
2. The amount of money.
3. The purpose for the money (lunch, snack, etc
)
4. My name.
With 18+ children to keep track of and several reasons to collect money, this helps me out tremendously and reduces the likelihood of errors. Also, if the envelope is left on the bus or dropped in the hallway, this information will help the money to be returned to my classroom. Please send one dollar per day for snack in an envelope and lunch money every two weeks in an envelope. DO NOT send five dollars for a week of snacks. I will not be responsible for that many childrens money each week. Thanks for your understanding.
Birthdays
Please contact me prior to your childs birthday to set up a time to bring in snacks if you wish. You may send me a note or call me and we will discuss the best time for treats/snacks to be brought to the school. I do welcome celebrating birthdays, they are so important, especially to young children.
Discipline
I have enclosed a copy of this plan in the back to school folder. It is pretty simple and easy for the children to follow. Please look for it in their folder, sign it and return it to me.
Newsletters
Newsletters will be sent home from time to time. The newsletter will contain information about things that are going on in our classroom and upcoming events. This is a handy reference, as you will see what skills have been or will be assessed and how your child is doing on those skills. I am going to try my best to send one home every week, there maybe some weeks that I do not send one home due to a hectic schedule.
Holidays and Field Trips
Our class will have a few parties during the school year - Halloween, Christmas, Valentines Day, etc
We will also go on a few field trips. A note is included in this packet for you to fill out and send back to school concerning parties and volunteering. Please note that all field trip money is due by a certain date. We make every effort to get the information to you in a timely manner so you can get the money in on time. Just as you have to pay your bills by a certain date, we have to have field trip money by a certain date.
Volunteers
There will be many opportunities for you to volunteer throughout the year. I welcome all offers. I feel it is very important for your child to know that you support him/her in his/her education. Your support can be exhibited in a number of ways. These include serving as room mother, helping at parties, sending party goods, chaperoning field trips, or helping with classroom projects. I do ask that you give me at least a days notice of when you would like to volunteer so that I will be properly prepared.
Daily Folders
Please check your childs folder DAILY for notes, newsletters, etc
I check the childrens folders each morning for notes, money, etc
so please check them every night for any correspondence from the school or me.
Labeling
I encourage you to label your childs jackets, sweaters, coats, and backpacks, etc
with their full name. This helps in returning your childs belongings to them and not having to search through lost and found.
Wish List
Each year I am asked by parents what type of items do I need for our classroom. I have a few suggestions and they are just that, suggestions:
* any type of paper for children to use for drawing
* Card stock - found at Wal-Mart, Office Depot, and Michaels
* Stickers/prizes - small toys from fast food places make excellent prizes for our class treasure box. We will be using stickers each day for folders and to place on our reward chart so any type of sticker is great.
* Anti-bacterial cleaning spray such as Spic and Span or Clorox wipes to clean the desk.
* If you are getting rid of a TV, please let me know. We could use one in our classroom. We have a wall mount/stand but no TV. We can use it for DVD/VCR movies from time to time.
Your child is taking an important step, starting kindergarten. I look forward to working with you and your child. Together we will guide your child on the journey of learning. May this journey be exciting and fulfilling!
Thanks,
Mrs. Cheryl (Abbott) Cook
