WHAT'S HAPPENING IN FOURTH GRADE ?
An exciting, new school year is underway. We are already busy developing good work habits. We have talked about the importance of maintaining agenda books, staying organized, and of course the big one…making sure homework is done! Many of the members of our class have already made their M.A.R.K. (Manners, Academics, Respect, and Kindness) at Blue Bell School, earning Caught You Being Coupons or Being a Bucket Filler. I am confident this will continue as the year unfolds.
The students will continue to learn, strengthen their skills, and broaden their understanding of concepts in Everyday Math. The program is organized into six mathematical strands that cover a number of skills and content areas. Attention will be given to numeration and computation as well as geometry, data, and algebraic thinking. The hands-on approach and use of math tools allows the children to connect math to the real world as they develop a strong foundation. The children will also have the opportunity to practice and maintain skills as they use First in Math and Everyday Math. We have spent the first month working on Unit 1 which involves geometry. We have been discussing lines, segments, rays, polygons and circles. All of us have learned to use compasses, and have made concentric and non-concentric circles.
In Science, we will learn how to think like real scientists. Throughout each unit, the students will apply their knowledge of the Scientific Method. They will be making predictions, recording observations, and drawing conclusions. Our first hands-on kit will be Chemical Studies. This is always a favorite among fourth graders! We'll be investigating the mystery of five unknown substances through experiments.
The United States and its five regions will be the focal point of our Social Studies program this year. We began our journey by discovering why America is referred to as the Melting Pot. We will continue to look at our similarities and differences, and the reasons our ancestors chose to settle in this great place. The students are excited to learn the states and capitals as we travel across this great land.
The fourth grade Language Arts program is off and running. We are collecting our writing seeds and establishing our interests in order to create our purpose for writing. We are discussing books; how to choose them, when to know if a book is right for us, and what to do if we feel we want to abandon a book. In Making Meaning, the students are learning how to share their ideas and opinions about the books we are reading. They are asking questions and making connections to build their comprehension.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year together! Don’t forget to ask your child if they filled someone’s bucket each day. The students will enjoy explaining our new program that encourages respect and kindness towards others.
A FEW REMINDERS:
- Students should be practicing their math skills daily using First in Math and playing games on Everyday math online.
- Wednesday Folders - Please make sure to check the contents of your child's folder. Please sign the folder and return it the next day.
