Dear Parents/Guardians of Physical Education/Health Students: The following information is provided as a brief overview of physical education/health requirements, contents and procedures.
PE BASKETS/LOCKERS Every student will be assigned a basket or locker to store his/her gym uniform over night and to store his/her personal items during class. Those who are assigned baskets or lockers without built-in locks must provide a combination lock (NO KEY LOCKS ALLOWED) to secure his/her belongings. You may purchase a lock for your child from a store or rent one from the PE Department for $4.00, for the school year. Athletes who are assigned lockers with built-in locks will pay $5.00 for each locker that is needed.
PE UNIFORMS AND APPROPRIATE DRESS Students may wear a Fort Middle School PE uniform or T-shirts, gym shorts with an elastic waist band, or sweat/wind pants. Girls may not wear shorts that are determined to be too short (those that do not reach the finger tips while standing). No football/basketball jerseys, sleeveless shirts, cut off shorts or shirts, pajama bottom, or clothes worn to school are allowed. For safety reasons gym shoes are required daily. DRESSING OUT AND PARTICIPATION POLICY Every student is required to dress out and participate daily for all PE activities. If a student dresses out for class but refuses to participate he/she will lose 3 points from his/her participation grade. Each time a student fails to dress out, during a grading period, he/she will lose 5 points from his/her participation grade and the following consequences will be applied: First Offense A verbal warning will be issued Second Offense A letter will be sent home to Parent/Guardian Third Offense An after school detention will be assigned Fourth Offense An office referral will be issued Students will lose 2 points for the following: Inappropriate shoes, shirt, or shorts; being tardy to their squad line. COURSE CONTENT The physical education curriculum consists of fitness, team and individual sports, and recreational games and activities. As mandated by state law, every student is required to take six weeks of health during each school year. Topics will vary for each grade level. STUDENT ILLNESS If a student becomes ill and does not need to participate in class activities, parents may send a note which will excuse his/her child from participating. However, his/her child still must dress out for class on that date. Only a doctor’s note will be considered an appropriate excuse for a student not to dress out or participate for extended periods of time. STUDENT ASSESSMENT Student grades will be based on class participation, dressing out, written test, notebooks and performance assessments. |
