Welcome to Miss Tr emallo's Kinder News! Week of February 6, 2012 Our theme of the week will be Basic Needs. This will be a multi-week unit where the students will learn about our four basic needs of shelter, food, clothing, and love. This week we will be focusing on the need for shelter. We will be reading A Place to Call Home and How a Home is Built. The students will be completing writing activities having to do with these stories and will be talking about their own homes. The class will be introduced to the sight word "this" during the week. Our letter of the week will be O. For letter formation, we are now starting to learn the letters that have curves in them rather than simply straight lines. In math, we are finishing our unit on our "teen" numbers: numbers from 11-20. This will included working on proper formation, counting order, and identifying the ones and tens places. In religion, we are working on Chapter 14: Jesus Gives Us Friends. We are also getting ready for Valentine's Day in kindergarten and will be making valentines for our families and completing some valentine writing activities both in our journals and for the hallway! Our Centers for the week include: Reading Groups/Journal Writing Fine Motor Listening/Computer Writing Center (Winter Activity Books) Here are a few things to remember. *Make sure you check your child's folder everyday after school for information pertaining to our class and to view your child's daily work. *Also, please remember to label your child's uniform, especially gym sweatshirts and sweatpants, since these items may be taken off during gym and tend to get mixed up as to whom the owner is. *Our letter person of the week will be Mr. O. Please reinforce this letter sound at home, whenever possible, as you read with your child. The children should bring in a picture cut from a magazine or from computer clipart...or a sticker...that begins with the letter O. They will be asked to share their "picture word" with the class. Please bring in a picture by Wednesday, February 8th. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING "NEW WORK": *Please review sight words with your child at home. Your child can practice reading the words, writing the words, and using the words in a sentence. Your child will be receiving a weekly spelling journal where they will practice writing four words a week. Directions on how your child should complete their spelling journal are taped to the first page of the journal. Your child should continue to practice his/her four spelling journal words each night. Therefore, it would be better to keep the journal home until Friday so your child can practice. Every Friday we will have a "word wall fun" quiz on our four sight words for that week. Students will also receive their guided reading books. These books will be sent home in a large Ziploc bag along with a practice worksheet. Inside the bag, there will be directions on when books/work are due back to school. Please make sure your child reads these books each night with you at home.
