6th Grade General Science

Course Overview:

Science in the 6th grade is an intensive introduction to physical scientific understandings integrating both science and math with application taking place through processes and methods of inquiry. Students will be introduced to the nature of science through the use of the problem-solving scientific method which will be carried throughout the course. Students will begin the year by learning about their new environment; the science lab. Students will learn safety methods and be expected to work cooperatively in their new surrounding. Following the brief introduction to the science lab studentsÂ’ first unit will be that of measurement. Students will learn both the standard and metric systems. Following the unit of measurement, students will learn about the properties of matter; that materials can be classified as pure substances or mixtures, depending on their chemical and physical properties and an emphasis on lab report writing will take place throughout this unit. The second half of the year we will begin looking at our Weather & Climate unit and our Energy in the Earth's Atmosphere unit.  Students will be looking at ecology as well as complete a project on the Long Island Sound.
