Tom Sawyer
Tom Sawyer is a book written by Mark Twain. The book has been adapted as a play at the Meroney Theater in Downtown Salisbury. The play and book share the adventures of the mischievous boy named Tom and his best friend, Huckleberry Finn. The play is set in Missouri, along the Mississippi River in 1845. This link is an on-line pdf file that contains background information, terminology, and activities that can be done with students before and after the play. It even includes recipes, games, and ways to integrate many areas of the curriculum. This link provides a lesson plan to accompany the book. It provides things like character charts, lesson extension and resources. Many of the ideas can be modified to use for the play. There are links for students to read the book for free online. As an extension, there is a writing activity asking student to relate Tom's adventures to present day "mishaps" of children. This script has eight scenes and can be used as a Reader's Theater product. This link provides teacher links and student links. The teacher links provide lesson ideas to learn about Mark Twain and his works. The student links allow children to go on a virtual tour and participate in a scavenger hunt. The virtual tour is a Powerpoint pdf. Some of the slides can be deleted to suit your needs. Other Considerations
