Welcome to the 7th Grade Dolphin Team! Reading We are reading the historical fiction novel, The Cay by Theodore Taylor. The setting is on a Caribbean island during WWII. It is an heart-warming story of how an 11-year old boy, Phillip, and an elderly West Indian, Timothy, bond after they become stranded on a tiny remote island. The two learn to overcome obstacles, and using survival skills, develop a wonderful friendship. Math Sept. - Oct. 2009 In math, the first 9-weeks will focus on the following goals and objectives from the NC Standard Course of Study: Goal 4 - Data Analysis Objective 4.01 - Students will organize and analyze data using various types of graphs including: bar graphs double bar graphs stem and leaf plots histograms circle graphs box and whisker plots scatter plots line graphs Objective 4.02 Calculate and interpret measures of central tendencies Objective 4.03 Describe how various measures of central tendencies affect the graph Objective 4.04 Identify outliers and determine their effects on data analysis Objective 4.05 Solve problems involving two or more sets of data Goal 1 - Numbers and Operations Objective 1.02 Develop fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of rational numbers Objective 1.03 Develop flexibility in solving problems by using various strategies Goal 5 - Algebra Objective 5.03 Use and evaluate algebraic expressions to solve problems Gradesheets - Students have a gradesheet which keeps a daily record of each student's math grades. This gradesheet is to be shared with parents on a regular basis. Parents will be asked to sign gradesheets several times each quarter. Notebooks - Each student has been provided a notebook in which to copy math notes. These notes are to be reviewed nightly to prepare for tests. PODS - Problems of the Day (PODS) are warm-ups to start out each class period. These PODS give the students a chance to investigate various ways to solve math problems. PODS are graded - EASY 100's! Homework Some form of math homework is assigned nightly, Monday-Thursday. It should take less than 20 minutes but is important review.
