  7th Grade Science

Salty Dogs Team

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Week of June 1-4:
The last week of class students will complete their physics cars. Students will create cars out of everyday items and will race them against their classmates and the other 7th grade teams!
Week of May 24-28:
Last week students went on a scavenger hunt to find simple machines at work throughout the school. On Thursday, students began a project in which they will build a "Rube Goldberg," or a really compound machine made of simple machines. I do have some materials for students to use in class but students were asked to be creative and use some materials from home to help them build their machines. The assignment will be completed in class and students are working in groups.
Week of May 17-21:
It is EOG week, and we all know that students will be stretched to the limit, so in science this week I hope students can relax and truly enjoy their labs. On Monday students will take a walk around the school to find as many simple machines around the school as possible in a simple machines scavenger hunt activity. On Tuesday, students in groups will begin to design and build a Rube Goldberg, which will consist on several simple machines working together to complete a task.
Week of May 10-14:
This week students will study for and take a quiz on Newton's 3 Laws and speed and acceleration. Later in the week students will learn about simple machines.
Week of May 3-7:
This week students will delve into Newton's 3 Laws of Motion while completing labs and activities that will involve thought and mathematics. Please, please, please send in fettuccine pasta for a lab. Students will use fettuccine pasta to create a structure that can hold a science textbook, demonstrating Newton's 3rd Law of Motion. Also, interims were sent out Friday, April 30th. Please sign and return them to each teacher as soon as possible.
Week of April 26-30:
By mid week students will have mastered the variables and calculations for both speed and acceleration. On Wednesday students will take a short quiz to show their mastery. The later part of the week will be used to introduce Newton's 3 Laws of Motion J
Week of April 19-23:
WE ARE FINALLY STARTING PHYSICS!!! YAY! :) Students will defy school rules for a class period by calculating the speed of their mouths chewing gum, which we all know move really fast! Laughing Students will also learn about acceleration and velocity using some of their favorite toys: teach decks!!!
Week of April 12-16:
This week students will finally finish up our long unit on body systems. Their final assignment for the unit will be a written assignment in which students will interview an organ and then write a newspaper style article teaching the reader the importance of the organ and how it works. In class students will have time to write and revise their articles and then on Friday all of my classes will type their articles in the computer lab.
Week of April 6-9:
This week we will finally finish our journey through all of the body systems! We will wrap up body systems with our last system of study which is the nervous system. Students will learn how the nervous system helps to control their body and all the information that is processed by the body. Students will complete 8 "Brain Stations" in which they will put their nervous systems to the test, testing how their body processes information about the outside world including sense of smell and touch.
Week of March 22-26:
This week we will delve into two more body systems including the excretory and the endocrine. The later part of the week we will use to review the entire human body including all of its systems, and take a comprehensive Blue Diamond at the end of the week.
I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to all of the students and parents that gave to our Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser which sponsors the Donna M. Crandell foundation for CF.  The kids have really gotten into the fundraiser and have worked extremely hard to raise over $500 dollars for the Salty Dog team and over $1200 for the entire 7th grade. All of my students have exceeded my expectations for this cause and have truly made my proud. J
Week of March 15-19:
At the beginning of the week students will finish up their final assignment for the digestive system. The assignment requires the student to write about their favorite food as it travels through the system. Students must write from the perspective of food starting at the mouth and ending in the place where undigested food ends up. J  Later in the week we will move into the endocrine and the excretory systems.
Week of March 8-12:
This week we begin our "mini-unit" on the digestive system. Students will understand the digestive track and the importance of eating healthy. Please allow your student to bring a small snack with them to science on Monday, just make sure the snack has that the nutritional information on the package. Students will analyze the content of the snack to see what they are REALLY putting in their mouths.
Week of March 1-5:
We will use the beginning of the week to learn and understand the importance of muscles. Wednesday we will use an in class day to study for the science trimester exam on Thursday. Students were given a study guide for the exam on 2/25 and also given class time to complete the guides and ask any questions.  PLEASE have your student review the study guide each night in order to be prepared to the exam on 3/4.
Week of February 22-26:
This week students will continue understanding and mastering the importance and the parts of the skeletal system. Students will get to see a true skeleton by dissecting an owl pellet and piecing together the skeleton inside! After completion, students will take a short quiz on the bones. To prepare your student for the quiz play simon says with them. In class we played simon says using the bones. Your child will LOVE it and will show you how much they know about the skeletal system! :)
Week of February 15-19:
On Monday students will wrap up their "mini unit" of the respiratory system with a quiz. On Tuesday students will begin the skeletal system. Students will learn the many bones that make up the system, as well as the joints that hold them together. Later in the week students will create a skeleton completely out pasta. Their pasta person must be doing a physical activity and show a complete diagram of the human skeleton.
Week of February 8-12:
Students will be completing a portion of the writing assignment given by the state. Students will write on a prompt that is relevent to the course of study that we are currently studying, body systems. I believe students will be fully prepared to do well on the writing assignment, and will have majority of the week to use class times to research, write and revise their papers.
Week of January 26-29:
This week students will complete and present their Public Service Announcements.  All classes will choose a winner that will be shown over the tv system to the entire school in the month of February, which is heart health month.
Later in the week students will begin learning about the respiratory system.
*Remember that Monday is a teacher workday and that on Tuesday, the 26th, interims will be sent home for all classes.
Week of January 19-22:
On Tuesday students will take a quiz on the circulatory system. Students will be asked to identify the parts of the heart and the path that blood takes through the heart. Students will also be responsible for knowing the four components that make up blood.
On Wednesday, students will begin working on their final circulatory system assignment. For this assignment, students must educate their peers about the importance of being heart healthy and how to keep their heart healthy. Students will work in groups of their choice to create a 3-5 minute PSA (Public Service Announcement) educating Daniels about what they have learned over the past few weeks. Groups will have the majority of the week to plan out, create, and share their product.
*Remember that Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is a holiday for staff and students.
Week of January 11-15:
This week we will continue our journey through the circulatory system. By this  week students should have a clear understanding of the heart and circulatory system, so we will move into heart disections, and heart disease.
Week of January 4-8:
This week we will begin our unit on body systems. We will first define  a system, and then move into our first system of study, which is the circulatory system. This "mini-unit" will include a focus on the major organs that are involved in the circulatory system, and then move into environmental factors that could compromise the health of that system.
Week of December 14-18:
Students will finish up their study of genetics this week. Monday in class, students will finish their study guides and we will review as a class. Tuesday we will take the genetics test.  On Monday, I will stay after school for any student who needs extra help or wishes to have more time with me to study for the test. (2:30-3:15* Depending on how long the child wishes to stay. Please have rides ready accordingly) Wednesday students will take their final Blue Diamond on genetics and clean out their notebooks with a notebook check. Thursday and Friday will be reserved for watching Lorenzo's Oil.
