S Spelling List #20 - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Chapter 1-3 Our class was blessed to have Council Member Ingrid Turner visit our classroom on Thursday and give each child their very own book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Every year Council Member Turner visits our school and read with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students as a part of her Read 4 Success program. We are very lucky to have her come to our school and donate the books! We will begin reading the chapter book as a part of our Reading Workshop. For the next coming weeks, out spelling words will come directly from the book. The words will get progressively harder, but your children will learn some wonderful adjectives, adverbs, and nouns that will enhance their writing as well! Please do not write your sentences until we have read the chapters and have worked a little more in class on becoming familiar with the meaning of the words. It is important during word study that you create sentences according to the meaning we discuss. It is also important to create sentences that are complete and make sense. The whole idea behind writing sentences for homework is to show that you understand the meaning of the word and can use it in a proper sentence. Without proper class time on the words, the sentences will be difficult to write. Don't forget, many words may have multiple meanings, but we write sentences based on the meaning that is used in the book. Thanks! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, April 16, 2012 SpellingList 25 Chapter18 ,19, 20 of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I explained to the students on Friday that they may take their spelling journals home with them and leave them at home (and was met with big cheers, haha!). Instead of the spelling journals, students will be given a blank writing paper on Monday and will need to use the week to write a short story or poem using AT LEAST 10 of the spelling words in the list. The story or poem will be due on Friday. The main focus is for the children to be able to use what they have learned in class during "Word Study" and write a story that makes sense and has a good flow. I will be looking for proper capitalization and punctuation as well! Students will be given the opportunity to share their story or poem with the class on Fridays, but this is not a requirement. Students will still have a test each Friday on the spelling of each word, therefore www.spellingcity.com is still available for practice each night. Since this is the first week of this homework, I will be giving the students examples of stories using past spelling lists. During class, the students will continue to engage in "Word Study" activities that define the words, identify the parts of speech, learn the many ways they can be used in a sentence, and of course how to spell them. My focus will be on the students honing in on the meaning and use of each word. This is critical in your child's continued development of vocabulary in writing and reading. Happy Writing!
