Strategic Reading Program


Objectives:  to achieve on or above grade level reading skills by improving decoding ability, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, to earn better grades in content courses through improved use of reading strategies.


NOTE- There is a change in schedule.  Mondays and Fridays will
be the days for practicing reading comprehension through empower3000.com, and decoding through Saxon Phonics. Journals
will still be due on Fridays.  Vocabulary Quizzes will shift to another day, and new vocabulary will be introduced after the quizzes every two weeks.

TUESDAY:

* Continue history reading strategy practice.
* Individual practice reading and responding to news articles with
  empower3000.com and decoding practice with Saxon phonics.
* Wrap up.
HOMEWORK: 
     - Read 30 minutes.  Log.
   - Study vocabulary.
   - Journal due Friday.

WEDNESDAY:  
* SSR/journal/book chat.
  Time your reading; create a progress chart.
* Review vocabulary.
* Individual practice reading and responding to news articles with
  empower3000.com and decoding practice with Saxon phonics.
* Wrap up.
HOMEWORK: 
     - Read 30 minutes.  Log.
   - Study vocabulary. 
   - Journal due Friday.

THURSDAY:  
* SSR/journal/book chat.
* Revisit T2T reading strategy.  Ms. Fick, guidance counselor shows you how
  she's used it in her job.
* Review for vocabulary quiz.
* Individual practice reading and responding to news articles with
  empower3000.com and decoding practice with Saxon phonics.
* Wrap up.
HOMEWORK: 
     - Read 30 minutes.  Log.
   - Study vocabulary.  Quiz Monday.
   - Journal due tomorrow.

FRIDAY: 
* SSR/journal/book chat.  Share some new entries.  What are some of the  
  themes?
* Review vocabulary.  See flashcard link below.   Around the World or
  vocabulary activity (sorting competition)  Who can come up with the most
  unusual categories?
* Individual practice reading and responding to news articles with
  empower3000.com and decoding practice with Saxon phonics.
* Wrap up.
