Happy Happenings

We read about several animals and their growth process.  It prepared us for what we saw on our visit to Lazy 5 Ranch.  It was a neat experience!  Thanks to the parents and grandparents that were able to attend.  You enhanced our experience.  On foot we so many different types of animals.  Then we boarded a  horse drawn wagon and saw, touched and fed so of they most interesting animals!  So, of course, we had to come back to Shive and draw, write and share what we learned new!

We enjoyed pumpkin/fall centers with all of first grade.  We participated in activities taught by Mrs. Hiatt, Mrs. Darnell, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Spry, Mrs. Drye, Mrs. Durham, Mrs. McCombs,  Mrs. Goodwin, Mr. Moose and Miss Myers.  We had lessons from math to literacy to social studies to computer.

We had such fun learning!

Did you know we have pirates at Shive?!  Mrs. Ingold's fourth grade students wrote expressive descriptive stories and they dressed the part and came to buddy up with our class to read and share with us.  So cool!

Coming soon...

Mrs. Debbye Krueger, the county dental hygienist, will be coming to Shive to do an interesting "hands-on" lesson for our first graders about germs.  She also will discuss life long teeth care with us.

Our very own Mrs. Brenda Shepard is planning a Native American activity for us on November 24th.

 open book               Reading Logs

Your child has been bringing home a reading log.  The reading log will come home every day.  Your child should read for ten minutes in the evening.  He / She may choose to bring a book from school or read one from home.  Parents need to document in the reading log, the date and title of the book, then sign and return each morning.

Some of the students have enjoyed their books so much that they have shared a written response with me.  I love that families are going the extra mile!  It creates love of learning literature.  I would encourage the rest of the families to join in the project.  It has become like a little book club.  The children share their book by writing a bit about it.  They have been exciting others to read the next book.  It has been so fun to see the enthusiasm!

Our class currently has earned 18 bees. At 10 bees we were rewarded game time chosen by the children. So we enjoyed "family night" type games.   (some oldies but goodies and some newer and hip)

The children really worked hard together as a team to reach this goal. We are so close to our next goal of 20!  11/6/09 we made our goal of 20 bees!  Parents, Friday Nov.13 is pajama party day.
