Happy Happenings

We have been staying pretty healthy! Scrubby Bear from the American Red Cross would be so proud of us!  He showed us how to keep our hands germ free. Mrs. Debbye Krueger, the county dental hygienist came to Shive to do an interesting "hands-on" lesson for our first graders.  We detected the germs hiding on our teeth with a special light of our very own! Hopefully, Mrs. Krueger and Mrs. Wanda Myers, Shive's nurse would be too! We have several "germie" activities coming up to continue our awareness.

Our own Mrs. Brenda Shepherd made us our very own bookworm to keep our place when we read.  We've learned he is a great reading listener.

 Thanks very much, Mrs. Shepherd!

We have been enjoying visiting the computer lab to read on  Raz-Kids.com. We hope you have checked it out at home!

We have 7 children from our class signed up to go to Book Buddies with their parents this week. If you couldn't come this time, no worries- keep the future dates:                                February 10th., March 10th. and April 14th.

...to join in... all family members are welcome.  Each child can have a family/ adult friend to be a buddy.  It would be wonderful if we all could participate.  It sounds like such fun!

 open book               Reading Logs

Your child has been bringing home a reading log.  The reading log will come home every day.  Your child should read for ten minutes in the evening.  He / She may choose to bring a book from school or read one from home.  Parents need to document in the reading log, the date and title of the book, then sign and return each morning.

Some of the students have enjoyed their books so much that they have shared a written response with me.  I love that families are going the extra mile!  It creates love of learning literature.  I would encourage the rest of the families to join in the project.  It has become like a little book club.  The children share their book by writing a bit about it.  They have been exciting others to read the next book.  It has been so fun to see the enthusiasm!

Our class currently has earned 12 bees. At 10 bees, we celebrated with game time chosen by the children. So we will enjoy "family night" type games.   (some oldies but goodies and some newer and hip)

The children are really working hard together as a team to reach this goal. Our next goal of 20 bees perhaps Mrs. Bondurant will play more piano for us. She gave us a sampling of her skills at Christmas. We had so much singing carols as a whole school! The day was great for us because Mr.Adcock did a tie activity to honor our last 20 bees. It was exciting to do 2 neat activities with both our principals on the SAME day! It would be sooo much fun to have Mrs.B. play just for US!   We had voted and then asked Mr.A to wear 20 ties. He said he would! Then, Mr.Adcock taught us how to tie a tie. We each wore one of his ties! He then wore the 20 ties all day for us. We loved it and we currently are writing a class story about it!
