Please complete the writing assignment distributed in class today, based on chapter one.  You may hand-write your response on the sheet OR you may type your paper (this will basically be one long paragraph).

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Please read chapter one of Call of the Wild (books were distributed in class).  Please use Post-it notes to mark any vocabulary you may not be familiar with (such as "primitive", as discussed in class!)  ALSO, be sure to make notations of various "causes" and "effects" on the graphic organizer distributed in class.

Monday, February 6, 2012

We have concluded our drama unit with wonderful performances for the middle school and Kindergarten buddies -- there were RAVE reviews for all!  We will begin our next novel study unit with a class reading of Call of the Wild.  The students will not be required to read large sections of the novel outside of class, understanding that they are also currently reading a historical biography and their next ORB is due March 2nd.  The students will have a fun project to complete for the biography they choose for literature class as well and details for that will be distributed this week  (I gave the students a quick "preview" today, but will give greater detail later in the week).

In order to set the scene for Call of the Wild, we discussed a little biographical information about Jack London (the author) as well as the Yukon/Klondike gold rush of 1896/97.  For homework tonight, the students have been asked to make a list (they will need to use the internet to get historically accurate information) of what would be necessary to take into the Yukon territory.  We discussed how those, hoping to discover their fortune, would be mandated to take one (1) year worth of supplies through the wilderness.  Students are asked to determine what is needed to fulfill that requirement!  We will discuss their "choices" tomorrow in class!  (Lists may be typed or recorded in their literature journals).

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Please continue to work on MEMORIZING your lines -- we will continue our run-throughs and work on scenery.  We are aiming for next Thursday (1 week!) to do a full rehearsal to see where we are and ability to perform for our buddies!

Reminder -- 4th ORB is due Friday, 1/20!

Friday, January 13, 2012

Continue to work on your lines -- you're already showing great progress!  Also, make note of costuming and scenery needs.

Reminder:  Next ORB is due Friday, 1/20!  Use your long weekend effectively!  Enjoy!

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Continue to work on memorizing your lines (don't worry -- we have about 2 weeks!)  Also, make notes for actions and stage directions to help with production.  Make note of costume needs as well.

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Happy New Year!

There is no homework tonight for literature but we are beginning our study of Greek and Roman myths and mythology.  We will be reading a few selections this week and then will be working on plays that depict various "lessons" from mythology.  We will not begin the plays until next week, but all of the preparation and work on the plays  will take place in class -- there are NO requirements for outside group work.  The students will present their play to their Kindergarten buddies as their final project!

Friday, December 15, 2011

We completed the review chapter sheet through chapter 17.  We will continue our discussion of the remaining chapters as well as the literary elements on Monday, in preparation of our test on Tuesday, 12/20.  Students are encouraged to review their notes to highlight important events to record on the review sheets;  if you want to take a run at the literary elements -- try it!  We'll discuss on Monday!  Enjoy your weekend!

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

Please read the remainder of the novel, Tuck Everlasting (including the Epilogue).  Also, work on your review chapters sheet (distributed in class today) -- we will work on it on Friday.  Final test on the novel will be Tuesday, 12/20.

Friday, December 9, 2011

Thursday, December 8, 2011

Please read up through chapter 14 of Tuck Everlasting.

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

Please read chapters 8 and 9 of Tuck Everlasting.

Monday, December 5, 2011

Please read chapters 6 and 7.  REMEMBER -- DO NOT READ AHEAD -- the point is to read the book as a class -- NOT to read ahead to be the first to finish.

Friday, December 2, 2011

We have started our next novel study, Tuck Everlasting!  We discussed the beginning of the book today and will continue our reading.  Please read chapters 3 - 5 for discussion on Monday, 12/ 5.

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Please find an adventurer (similar to Amelia Earhart) -- a real person, who has attempted to do something that you think is adventurous -- it can be someone trying to break a record, climb a mountain, accomplish something that you think is adventurous.  Bring in the info (it can be something you print from the computer) about who the person is and what they've done (or tried to do!) tomorrow.

REMINDER:  Second ORB is due next Friday, November 11th -- plan accordingly!

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Please write a journal entry about how you handle stress, disappointment, etc.  Remember how Nadia is handling her grief as well as what is making her feel better.  Also, Tarik is handling it quite differently -- we all handle things differently!  What do you do?  Write a journal entry of a few sentences describing your "technique"!

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Please list three (3) character traits for the three characters we have been introduced to in the short story, Nadia, the Willful.  The characters are Nadia, Tarik, and Hamed.  Also please write a few sentences about what YOU THINK the story will be about, based only on what we read in class (the first three paragraphs) -- you are PREDICTING, based on what we've read!  Due tomorrow (Wed. 10/26).

Monday, October 24, 2011

Please have your literature test signed and return tomorrow.

Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Students have completed reading A Single Shard.  We will continue to discuss the novel through this week and a final, comprehensive test on the novel will be given next week.

Friday, October 7, 2011

Please finish reading the novel, A Single Shard.

Thursday, October 6, 2011

Please read chapters 9 and 10 of A Single Shard.

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Please read chapter 8 of A Single Shard.

Monday, October 3, 2011

Please list two (2) items for each literary element (remember, we're not including plot yet, since we are only 1/2 way through the book).  You will need two examples for each of the remaining 4 traits (character, setting, theme, and conflict).  A list is sufficient, in your journals -- we will discuss in class tomorrow.

Friday, September 30, 2011

Please read chapters 5 - 7 of A Single Shard.

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Please read chapter 4 of A Single Shard.

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Please read chapter 3 of A Single Shard.

Monday, September 26, 2011

Please read chapters 1 & 2 of A Single Shard for Wednesday, 9/28.  We are beginning our study of this Newberry Award winning novel and will read the book, as a class, over the next few weeks.  Please DO NOT read ahead!  Remember to make note of any vocabulary, characters, setting, points of interest, you would like to clarify or share with the class.

Monday, September 19, 2011

Please complete the "Story Map" worksheet distributed in class today for our discussion of The Cay.

Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Please list/describe what you would have in a tomb!  Since we're dealing with fiction and "what-ifs", you may include modern-day items among your "riches"!  If you would like to draw a diagram of your tomb layout and where items would be, that would be great!

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Please write a few sentences about your FAVORITE character from The Golden Goblet.  Why was this character your favorite -- be sure to support your answer with credible evidence from the story!

Monday, September 12, 2011

Please write a "Reader's Response" to the novel, The Golden Goblet.  Remember, your response is how you reacted to the novel -- even if you didn't like the novel, there is something that stood out to you -- was it the characters, the setting, the plot -- what your "responded" to in the book.  Additionally, you MUST support your response with an explanation -- why did you respond to this!
