Language Arts News

Grade 8

Week of May 21, 2012

it's Spring-A-Rama week, and the eighth graders and I will be enjoying the aroma of the doughnuts all week!   In language arts class this week, we will be wrapping up quite a number of things.

In spelling, we have finished the work on our final unit, Unit 35, which are words taken from other languages.  the 8B group will test on these words on Wednesday, May 23, and the 8A group will test on the words on Monday, May 21.  This is a very "colorful" spelling test, as the students are permitted to complete the test in any color ink they choose, in celebration of their final spelling test.  The test on Unit 35 will complete the work in spelling for this year.

In English class, we have completed all assigned writing journals, and students will be receiving their writing folders from me at the end of this week.  It will be quite a collection of writing from the year!  The students should be getting their Chapter 23 tests, on subject and object pronouns, signed and those tests should be returned to school.  We are continuing with a chapter on punctuation:  uses of the comma, semicolon, and colon.  We will work on this chapter through this week and next.

In reading class we have finished reading the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, and have begun to view the movie.  Students will be expected to write a compare and contrast essay on the book vs. the movie, and they will be given a short final exam on the novel.  They will also take the A.R. Quiz associated with the novel when the essay and the test have been completed. Students need to complete one other A.R. Quiz on a book of their choice by Wednesday, May 23.
