Welcome to the 3rd grade!

WEEK: October November 16-20

READING & WRITING

*Reading logs have begun! Make sure your child is reading a grade appropriate book for at least 15 minutes a night and that you are signing them every Thursday!

*We haved moved into our next genre of writing "Plays" and have entered a play writing contest with B-Street Theatre.  They are writing them with a partner and will be doing them entirely in class.  The great thing is, two of my students won this contest last year and the theatre came and performed it for the entire school!  Encourage your child to do his/her best and be CREATIVE!

*Our November monthly writing will be a fact/opinion paper about what your child is thankfrul for.

ENGLISH & VOCABULARY

*This week we are working on using guide words to look up words in the dictionary.  As well as, finishing up our Vocabulary flash cards for our Unit 3&4 test on Thursday, the 19th and a Chapter 2 English Test on Friday, the 20th.

MATH

*This week we are focusing on Chapter 3, subtracting large numbers with borrowing twice.   There will be a Chapter Test, next week.

* We have started taking our timed multiplication tests.  Your child will need to finish 140 multiplication facts in 15min.  We will 1st make a set of multiplication flash cards your child will be able to leave in their backpack to study at school and at home.

They should be studying their multiplication facts nightly!

HANDWRITING

*We are almost finished with the cursive alphabet.   They will also have cursive practice as homework a few nights a week.  After Christmas break all the students will be writing everything in cursive.

SPELLING

Unit 12- 40 words! We are reviewing Units 7-11. Please check your child's homework folder for their first list of words. Every Wednesday night your child should be taking a practice test at home that is signed and corrected by you.

SCIENCE

*Chapter 4- Our Solar System (My favorite Unit!)

SOCIAL STUDIES

* Chapter 3 "Peaks and Deserts".

RELIGION

*Chapter 6- The Church begins

UPDATES...

*Please remember to check your child's homework nightly, and that he/she is reading at least 15 minutes a night.   Also be sure you are checking their agenda that should have all the homework for that night that is stamped by me.

*Please make sure I get report cards back and signed after our parent conferences!

*Tutoring has started every Tuesday and Thursday from 3-4pm.  It will not be a study hall, but I will be sending a note home for those that need to attend.

*The computer lab is up and running!  We will be spending a lot of time learning the keyboard and word processing.

* Thanksgiving break is almost here!  I will be sending a note home this week regarding our Thanksgiving Feast that will be held Thursday, November 19th from 11:45-2pm.  Please make sure you sign up to bring something and join us if you can!

Important- Surgery on my foot has been postponed from Thanksgiving break until December 8th.  I will be out from the 8th through the 11th.  If you need anything or have any concerns please do not hesitate to call or e-mail.  Mrs. Bushman who taught 2nd grade here for 27 years will be my sub.
