KAREN HATFIELD is a National Board Certified Teacher and Guidance Counselor at Kate Sullivan Elementary School. Mrs. Hatfield assists classroom teachers in providing support for children with academic, behavioral or emotional needs. She reinforces our school's Positive Behavior expectations: Be Safe. Be responsible. Be respectful.
During the last nine weeks she provides weekly presentations for K-1st grade classes that help students make safe choices in the areas of water safety, electrical safety, gun safety and sun/skin protection. Students review prior lessons on healthy heart choices, managing anger, making and keeping friends. Fourth and fifth grade classes are continuing their lessons on positive communication styles, group dynamics, dealing with peer pressure and the importance of community service. All fourth and fifth graders are participating in a Kidz Bite Back program that emphasizes healthy choices and moderation when eating out in fast food places. Students are encouraged to be physically active at least one hour every day. They are asked to limit the number of hours they watch television or play computer games to no more than two hours per day. Fourth and fifth grade parents are asked to go to the Kate Sullivan web page and complete the Kidz Bite Back Post Survey before the end of the year. Parents may view the human growth and development materials in the guidance office. Contact Mrs. Hatfield for a preview time at 487-1216.
