Week of February 6-10, 2012 

 

Welcome to 6th Social Studies at VMMS.  You may come to this site each week to find a listing of all of the week's lessons and activities.  Please email me if you have any questions.  Check below the lesson plans for notes or downloads you may need.

 

 

Standards:

 

SS6CG1.a   Describe the ways government systems distribute power: unitary, confederation, and federal.

SS6CG1.b   Explain how governments determine citizen participation: autocratic, oligarchic, and democratic.

SS6CG1.c   Describe the two predominant forms of democratic governments: parliamentary and presidential.

SS6CG2.a   Compare the federal-republic systems of the Federative Republic of Brazil (Brazil) and the United Mexican States (Mexico) to the dictatorship of the Republic of Cuba (Cuba), distinguishing form of leadership and the role of the citizen in terms of voting and personal freedoms.

SS6E1.a       Compare how traditional, command, and market economies answer the economic questions of 1) what to produce, 2) how to produce, and 3) for whom to produce.

SS6E1.b       Explain how most countries have a mixed economy located on a continuum between pure market and pure command.

SS6E1.c       Compare and contrast the basic types of economic systems found in Canada, Cuba, and Brazil.

SS6E2.a       Explain how specialization encourages trade between countries.

SS6E2.b       Compare and contrast different types of trade barriers, such as tariffs, quotas, and embargos.

SS6E2.c       Explain the functions of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

SS6E2.d       Explain why international trade requires a system for exchanging currencies between nations.

  5. What forms of leadership do the governments in Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba have, and how are the leaders of these countries chosen?

  6. What level of voting rights and personal freedoms do citizens have in Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba?

  1. How has the distribution of natural resources affected the economies of the Caribbean?

  2. How do governments impose trade barriers?

  3. How do the trade agreements made between countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (i.e. NAFTA) overcome trade barriers and encourage voluntary trade in the region?

  4. How do trade barriers (tariffs, quotas, and embargoes) prevent international trade from occurring between countries?

  5. Why is it necessary to exchange currencies for nations to trade?

  6. Why are the benefits of voluntary trade important for buyers and sellers?
