I - ACADEMIC PLAN:

***
Dear parent/guardian:

Welcome to our 2009-2010 school year! Reagan/Doral Senior High is one of the top high schools in Miami-Dade County and its administration is totally committed to providing your child with the best education he/she can receive. I will set high expectations for your child as well and will be available to help him/her succeed at every step of the educational process; however, the support he/she will receive at home will be invaluable. Please review this academic plan with your child as I have done in class, and let me know if there are any questions or concerns. I WILL NEED YOUR CHILD TO RETURN THE "AGREEMENT FORM" DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL WITH THE REQUIRED SIGNATURES. Thank you and let us all work together to enjoy another great academic year. Please check www.dadeschools.net for an official school calendar with important dates. Also remember to log on to parent link to check on your child's academic progress regularly. I am looking forward to meeting you during our Open House event, which will be announced on our school website soon.

Let's have a very successful 2009-2010 school year!

Thank you for your cooperation,

Mrs. A. Soler

MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES:

1. Textbook:

Algebra 2 Regular:  Algebra 2 (2004) Prentice Hall  (Available in class or online)

Algebra 2 HonorsAlgebra 2 - Mc Dougal-Littel  (Available in class or online)

2. Spiral Notebook (tearout sheets) with 4 dividers:

    A- DSR (Daily Skills Review)

    B- Class Notes,

C- Homework (homework may also be turned in on loose-leaf paper)

  D- Vocabulary)

3. Graph paper

4. 2 sharpened pencils

5. 1 yellow highlighter

6. 2 blue pens

7. 12-inch clear ruler

8. 1 small pencil sharpener

CALCULATORS AND FCAT REFERENCE SHEETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AND PROVIDED BY THE TEACHER, HOWEVER, A BASIC CALCULATOR IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR CLASS USE.  INFORMATION ON GRAPHING CALCULATORS WILL BE FORTHCOMING!

CLASSROOM LEARNING:

A. Notebook: (ONLY FOR ALGEBRA 2)

All work will be done in pencil ONLY! (WORK WILL NOT BE GRADED IF IT IS NOT DONE IN PENCIL!) The blue pen will be used for peer review. Every assignment is to start on a new page and include proper heading per specifications GIVEN IN CLASS. The notebook may be collected at least once (at any time) during each 9-week grading period and will count as 2 grades. (STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO KEEP A COMPLETE AND ORGANIZED CLASS NOTEBOOK NOT ONLY TO PREPARE FOR TESTS AND QUIZZES AND NOTEBOOK GRADES, BUT TO USE AS QUICK REFERENCE FOR OCCASIONAL OPEN NOTES QUIZZES. STUDENTS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SHARE NOTES.)

1. DSR (Daily Skills Review):

Every day we will begin class with a 10-minute FCAT-type review exercise (DSR). DSR problems are a form of participation and will be reflected in the participation grade. If the student is absent, whether excused or unexcused, the student will not be able to make up the DSR. DSR material will be included in quizzes as well.

2. Class Notes:

Class notes are to be taken daily and include explanations, strategies, and examples given in class.

3. Homework:

Homework will be assigned daily and will remain in your notebook for review the next day. (See HOMELEARNING BELOW)

4. Vocabulary:

All vocabulary words included in one lesson are to be copied onto this section.

B. Class Participation:

Class participation includes being prepared for class by having all necesssary materials and supplies ready, participation in group activities and discussions, and being attentive and courteous at all times. As regular attendance is a prerequisite for class participation, attendance will be reflected in this grade. Absenteeism, tardies, and requests for bathroom passes all affect regular attendance and class participation.

Up to three (3) bathroom passes will be given for emergencies during a 9-week period. If not used, students will be given extra credit during a 9-week period. (Students have many other opportunities to go to the bathroom during brakes, lunch, and before/after school.) Exceptions will be made for those students with a medical condition who will provide a doctor's certificate.

HOME LEARNING:

Homework will be assigned daily with a few exceptions, and due next class, unless otherwise specified. Incomplete homework will not be accepted. Homework assignments will be written on the board or on this webpage. Homework will be assigned from the textbook, workbooks, or in the form of handouts provided by the teacher. All vocabulary words for the lesson need to be copied onto the vocabulary section. HOMEWORK WILL BE COLLECTED AND GRADED AT RANDOM. Students are expected to ask and answer questions about the homework. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS ARE NOT TO BE COPIED FROM ANOTHER STUDENT AS THIS PRACTICE NOT ONLY VIOLATES THE STUDENT HONOR CODE, BUT HAS A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN HOMEWORK QUIZZES AND TESTS.

...and remember...all steps need to be shown...

NO WORK = NO CREDIT!

GRADES:

Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. Homework quizzes will be given every week. Two short quizzes may be combined into one quiz for one homework quiz grade at the end of the week.  QUIZZES MAY BE ANNOUNCED OR UNANNOUNCED!  At least one individual or group project will be assigned per grading period.

Distribution:

55% Tests/Quizzes

30% Classwork/Homework

15% Projects and Alternative Assessments (DSRs, class participation, etc.)

ATTENDANCE/MAKE UP POLICY:

Homework assignments will be due next class unless otherwise specified. If a student is absent for one class, the student will be required to turn in homework on the day he/she returns to class. If a student is absent for two consecutive class sessions, the student will be required to turn in his/her homework on the second class session after the absences. This pattern will apply for any number of consecutive absences up to a maximum of three weeks. The student is responsible for any missed material. The student is to get missed assignments from the class calendar (if available) or from his/her classmates. AS A LAST RESORT, THE STUDENT MAY CONTACT THE TEACHER VIA EMAIL TO INQUIRE ABOUT MISSED ASSIGNMENTS. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT STUDENTS WILL NOT BE REMINDED OF MISSING ASSIGNMENTS AND NO WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE DEADLINE STATED. A WRITTEN EXCUSE IS REQUIRED UPON RETURN TO CLASS IN ORDER TO EARN CREDIT FOR THE MAKE-UP WORK. FAILURE TO COMPLETE MAKE-UP WORK WILL RESULT IN A ZERO (Z) FOR THAT ASSIGNMENT.

IN ORDER TO MAKE UP A TEST OR QUIZ, A STUDENT IS TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE TEACHER FOR THE WEDNESDAY FOLLOWING HIS/HER RETURN TO SCHOOL. A DIFFERENT VERSION OF THE TEST OR QUIZ WILL BE ADMINISTERED.

CONDUCT:

All basic school and district policies must be adhered to with respect to absences, tardies, school uniforms, etc.

A. Rules

1. Respect yourself, others, and the teacher.

    a. Be on time

    b. Bring all required materials to class (no borrowing)
