Writing
We are currently doing Writer's Workshop in our writing classes. This allows students to spend a lot of time writing in class. They are very excited about their great stories. Occasionally students will bring home their writer's notebook to share with you.
This month we are concentrating on writing personal narratives. We are looking at:
Focus- We must write stories about small moments. For example, we don't want to write a story about everything we did on our Myrtle Beach vacation. We should write about one moment, like catching that big wave while riding our boogie board.
Organization- Our stories should have a beginning, middle, and end. Our middle should be much larger, because it contains our big moment, step-by-step with details.

Problem Solving
We will be doing a sheet called Week-by-Week Essentials. The students will be given this on Monday, and it is due on Friday. The Keeping Skills Sharp is required. Most of the time the Problem of the Week is required. I will have your child label the other sections with a star (which means it is required) or EC (which means Extra Credit). This sheet is a review of skills taught in fourth grade and provides some multistep problems.
We also do Accelerated Math daily. If you would like for your child to have more practice, they can always bring this home to complete. It is a great way to review skills that have already been taught.
Please see the assignment book for nightly assignments. These are usually started in class, but must be finished for homework.
SciencePlease remember we alternate science and social studies.
We will cover science the 2nd half of the nine weeks.
Social Studies

Early Settlers in NC
Native Americans in NC
Most of our Social Studies should be completed in class. Occasionally your child may need to get caught up and finish something at home. We will write this in their agendas, when necessary.

Notes to Parents:
Please make sure that you are signing your child's agenda daily. Initial at the bottom of each day.
Behavior Charts
A small behavior chart on a white label will be placed in your child's planner above the Monday section of each week. I will record any numbers that your child receives that day in the bottom row of the chart. . Any letters above the black line shows something that your child excelled in that day.
