Welcome to Mrs. Bernstein's 5th Grade Band Web Page
There are two major parts to band, there are small group lessons and there is 9th period band rehearsal when everyone gets together to play.
9th Period Band is every Tuesday and Friday
*If your child needs to go to remedial on Tuesday they are excused, they just need a pass from their remedial teacher to the band teacher. The classroom teacher determines the needs of the child, if they need to go to remedial. If the teacher determines that they can wait to go to Thursday remedial instead of missing band on Tuesday, they will. Please send your child with their instrument every Tuesday even if you think they are going to remedial.
Lessons: A rotating lesson schedule is available today. Students will have a small group lesson on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Your children will have a lesson schedule starting Friday September 25. This schedule provides the periods and dates of lessons for the entire school year.
Materials needed for band and lessons: Band folder or binder that contains a lesson book, band sheet music, and a practice log. Pen/Pencil Agenda book Instrument (All low brass players will have an instrument for home and one for school. All they need to bring is a mouthpiece. Percussionist will need a bell kit for lessons only and sticks for period 9 band)
**Practice Logs are due every week. I expect to see a practice log from every student every week with practice minutes fill out. At the end of the quarter I keep it and it is 20% of your child's grade.
Goal: Rhythm time The students will learn the definition of rhythms and learn how to count, clap, and play them accurately.
Homework: Week of November 9: Count, and clap, and say the names of the notes for African Folk Trilogy and Scooby Do. Isolate problem spots.
5 Ways to Help your child succeed:
Help your child create a practice routine. Sign their practice Log every week. Ask your child what they are learning in lesson or what band pieces they are working on in band. Have a monthly concert for the family every first Sunday of the month. Show your child that you believe playing and learning an instrument is important. Please contact me with any questions, comments or concerns. Thank you. |
