Investigation 2/Third Law

1.  Newton'sthird law states that for every action force there is an equal and oppositereaction force.  When the balloon is let go, the air rushed out theballoon's neck; that is the action force.  The balloon then flies inthe opposite direction; that is the reaction force.

2.  The girl will roll backward from the wall because the wall pushesback with a force equal to that of the girl's force.  The girlpushing is the action force and the wall's pushing back is the reaction force.

3.  When you push against the back of the rowboat, the reaction forceis divided.  Some of the reaction force results in the boat's movingthrough the water in the boat's moving through the water in the same directionas your push.  Some of the reaction force pushes back against yourfoot, giving you the lift out of the boat.  But since the boat hasmoved backward, you step into the water instead of onto the dock.  

4.  No.  You can't jump as high on a sandy beach becausesome of the force of your push - the action force - results in a compression ofthe sand and some results in a push back against your feet.  When youpush against a basketball floor, the floor moves very little, so almost all ofthe reaction force pushes back against your feet, allowing you to jump high.

     Reaction - Child & partner move away from eachother

     Reaction - Ball moves up and away

3.  Action - Frog pushes down on lilly pad
     Reaction - Frog jumps up and off lilly pad

Rocket
1st Law - Rocket gets put into motion by engine.  Rocket will stay inmotion, in a straight line and at a constant speed.

3rd Law - Action force - Enginesfire down
                Reaction force - Rocket moves up

Football
2nd Law - A bigger player will require more force to overcome inertia i.e.
          tackle.  Asmaller player will accelerate faster.


3rd Law – Action force- one player tackling the other player.

                  Reaction Force- Player movesaway from each other

Row Boat
1st Law – the boat is in motion and will stay in motion.


2nd Law – the paddle is the outside force moving the boat. The harder youpaddle (more force) the farther you will go.

1.  Football in field - 1st Law
The ball is at rest.  It will stay at rest.  It hasinertia.

2.  Driver slamming on brakes - 1st Law
The people in the car have inertia.  They are objects inmotion.  They want to stay in motion.  When the car stops,their bodies want to continue moving so they fall forward.

3.  Boy jumping out of boat - 3rd Law

Action force: stepping off the boat

6.  Girl throwing a ball (big vs. small) - 2nd Law
It will take more force to throw the big ball versus the small ball. The sameamount of force will accelerate the smaller ball more than the larger onedue to difference in mass.
