What Does a Guidance Counselor Do?

• Provide Classroom Guidance Lessons on Virtue and Character Traits ( two times a month in each class)
• Work with individual students and groups
• Help identify needs of students
• Encourage better interpersonal skills and  relationships
• Promote positive attitudes and choices
• Aid teachers and parents in helping students
• Assist students with the process of growing up
• Coordinate referrals to outside agencies including psycho-educational testing
• Work with Student Support Team
• Your child is having academic, social, or emotional difficulty
• A change has occurred in your family dynamic (divorce, death, illness)
• You have noticed a change in your child’s personality and attitude towards school
• Your child has disclosed feeling harassed, bullied, singled-out or depressed

How to refer your child to Guidance

Should you have any classroom concerns regarding your child, contact your child’s teacher to discuss the situation.  If you and the teacher decide that your child could benefit from guidance services, either you or the teacher can contact me.  If your child’s concerns are more of a personal nature such as change in the family, an illness, or anxiety, feel free to contact me directly.  You can reach me via phone at (770)381-0557 or email: lussery@sjnrcs.org.  I will make every effort to get back to you in a timely manner.
