Mask:Home Art Project(given on 11/6/09) (Due date – 11/12/09)

Supplies:

  • Cut Approx. 65 – 1 ½ inch squares of plaster gauze

  • small tray of water

  • news paper

  • paper towels

  • hair pins

  • Vaseline

  • Blow dryer (optional)

  • Smock/old shirt

  • Partner

Directions:

  • Pin hair back

  • Apply thin coat of vaseline to face out to jaw and hairline

  • Place 3 small sections of wet paper towel over eyes (including the brows) and mouth

With one gauze square at a time, dip in water, (set water closest to person – set gauze next to it) then smooth onto face, leaving nostrils open, but working around and between them (cut thin strips to go in between nostrils). Continue to cover whole face, (approx. 2 – 3 layers) until you can't see through gauze to skin. Gently smoothing into features. Do not go below the chin, just up to chin and jawbone, and to hairline.

  • Allow to dry, (approx) 15 to 20 minutes. (To speed drying you may use a blow dryer)

Mask will feel warm and begin to harden.

  • Gently holding sides, pull away from face

  • Wash face

  • Allow mask to completely dry over night

  • Write name and section on inside of mask when completely dry

  • (Painting and decoration will be done in class)
