HELP   US    STAY    WELL

http://www.rss.k12.nc.us/Health/images/sick_jpg.jpg

The flu and cold season has gotten off to a busy start and I am sure it will be just a matter of time before we are affected by it in some way.  To help keep it somewhat of a minor issue,  we are  trying to wash our hands with SOAP and WATER as often as we can before snack, before lunch, and after using the bathroom.  We also encourage students when they need to cough to make sure they are using their hands or shirt sleeve to cough into.  Please also remember when your child is absent from school for any reason to send a absence note to school the day he/she return to school.

How Are Things Going?

We have gotten off to a great start!  The students are eager to learn and seem to enjoy coming to school.  Each day is busy with lots of fun and exciting learning opportunities. Parental support and encouragement is appreciated so that each child hears and learns all they can in the short time we have together in the year.  We have started Share Time and the students seem to really enjoy trying to guess what their classmates bring to school on their special day.  They look forward to hearing the clues written on paper to figure out what is hidden in their classmate's secret bag.  Please remember to help your child bring something on their day and thanks for your support in this special activity.

So Long and Good Luck

Grayson Phillips was only with us for one week.  She had moved back to Rocky Mount where her family's home has not sold.  We wish her well and look forward to new adventures in class daily.

AR Reading Celebration
Plant A Seed .....READ
The schoolwide AR celebration was held on Friday, September 11th.  The day began with a music and instrumental celebration outside in front of the school.  Mr. Miller and Dr. Lingle-Linder tried their skill at riding a tractor.  After the outdoor festivities we went inside to the media center where Mr. Robert and one of his colleagues from the Rowan Public Library shared a story with us.  They used students and puppets to tell the story The Enormous Turnip.  From there we went outside to learn about bees from Buddy the Bee Man and sampled some honey.  He gave us some candy made from honey.  Before lunch we went inside to use the new slimline computers in the computer lab.  We use the program, "Kidspix" to click and drag pictures of healthy foods. We ate lunch in the classroom while watching the schoolwide movie, The Secret Garden for the whole school on the television.  After eating lunch, we went outside to play on the playground before the afternoon AR activities started.  In the afternoon, Mrs. Paula Sloop and Mrs. Claire Watts helped learn a reading slogan.  Mr. Doug Byrd and Mrs. Sara Misenheimer helped us decorate bookmarks.  Before the day ended, we listened to our own cafeteria manager, Mrs. Wanda Pender and some of the Rowan County Schools cafeteria staff talk to us about healthy foods and some foods which grow in the ground.  We got to sample watermelon and carrots.  It was a GREAT way to kickoff our schoolwide reading theme for the year and look forward to each child reaching their AR reading goal each quarter this school year.

Help Me Reach My AR Goal

All kindergarten students wanting to attend the first quarter AR reward must read 25 books or more for this quarter. There will be a 50% club, 100% club, and 150% club.  Those students who read 13 books (half of the 25) by Tuesday, September 29th or before will get their name added to the 50% club.  Those students who read 25 books by Tuesday, November 10th or before will get their name added to the 100% club. Those students who read  25 books plus an additional 13 for a total of 38 books for 150% will get their name added to the 150% club.  Those students who reach their AR  goal each of the four quarters will be attending a year end AR celebration at Patterson Farm in June 2010.

New Addition to Our Class
We added a new character to our class this week.  Our
friendly bear named "Millbridge the Bear" will be coming
home with your child for a weekend this school year. He
will come home with his very own bookbag and a
notebook.  We are asking each child who brings
him home to take good care of him and write in his
special journal about his weekend adventureseach day while
he is away at your house.  We would
also like for you to take some pictures to show us
what Millbridge and your child did over the weekend.
We understand it will take time to develop pictures;
therefore, please leave room in Millbridge's journals
for pictures.  We will make sure they get placed inside
his journal.
