Math

Place Value Here We Come!
We are working with counting by tens and ones and making groups of 2, 5, and 10.
Addition and Subtraction Action
Keep working on addition and subtraction this quarter. We are still taking our timed tests every Wednesday.

Ways to help your child:
  •  Count cars while driving.
  • Ask your child "What number comes (before/after) 12? What number comes between 19 and 21?
  • Look for numbers in your environment. For example, have your child read prices at the grocery store, find all the numbers they can on a box of cereal, or read the numbers on road signs while riding in the car.
  • Count cheerios, m&ms, marsh mellows or any snack foods as they eat? How many bites does it take to eat an apple?
  • Make groups of ten with cereal, gummy bears, bottle caps, Legos and count by 10 to see how many.
  • Add food before eating.
  • Subtract food while eating.

Reading/Language Arts
The best part of reading is getting to choose your own book! We have been discussing "Good Fit Books". These are books that are the best fit for use to read. My "good fit book" and your "good fit book" may not be the same and that's ok because we are not the same. Here are some ways to help your child choose a good fit book.
Ask - Is this book about something I am intrested in?
Take a Picture Walk through the book - Do I like the pictures in this book?
Read - Can I read some of the words on each page of this book?
Notice the word some. Students do not need to be able to read every word of a book - just some of them. Your guidance and reading expertise will help them with the rest.

Use these three things as guidelines to help choose books your children will enjoy. Then Read! Read! Read!

After Reading - Now What?
After you have enjoyed a book with your child, ask your child some simple questions to get them thinking about the story.
Who was in the story? (Characters)
What happened in the story? (Events)
When did the story take place?(Setting)
Where were they in the story? (Setting)
Why did ___ happen in the story?

Don't forget to write down the stories you read together in your child's reading log! Our class goal is for each child to read 100 books by the end of first grade!

Homework

Please make sure your find your child's new homework folder!
****************
Homework is in direct relation with what is being done in class. Your child should have a good idea of what is going on with homework if they are working hard and paying attention at school. However, if you have questions, please write me a note or call me at school before 3:30.
******************
This folder will come home every night Monday through Friday. Use their spelling words in the agenda to help complete the homework and return it the next day. All homework is due back to school no later than Friday of the week it is given.
Friday's homework is to read! I will check reading logs on Fridays so please remember to send them to school. They should stay in your child's homework folder so they are easy to find. I will send them home over the weekend so that you can record any weekend readings as well.

Tuesday Folders

Tuesday folders are yellow and will come home in addition to homework folders. Please review your child's work and any papers in the folder. Please sign and make any comments you feel neccessary. If you have a question about your child's work, please let me know.

We are working on reading 100 more books by the end of the year. Most students met this goal and were rewarded with an ice cream party before the winter break! Keep reading nightly! And write it in your reading log!
