January School Notes

Please remember to bring hats, gloves, scarves etc.  to school everyday.  The children will be going outside for recess.

LANGUAGE ARTS

During the month of January we will be helping our students to access, process, and express language.  Assessing will help our students identify the printed word, processing helps them to understand, and expressive skills include spelling, grammar, and usage.  At this point in January our students should be able to identify capital and lowercase letters and all of the letter sounds targeted thus far.

Most of us now should be in the process of blending sounds to read and decode words.

In kindergarten we use real and nonsense words to practice blending sounds.  Our goal is to teach students to blend sounds rapidly, not read specific words.  To that end, we will be sending home blending practice sheets with each new Superkid book we begin.  Please keep this chart in your child’s take home folder to practice on a daily basis (about five minutes each day).  Your child should be familiar with the contents of the charts as we practice blending during reading.

RELGION

We are learning about the Blessed Mother Mary.  We are trying our best to behave like Mary, who said “yes” to everything God wanted.

Remember Tuesday is Mass day!

We will be going to mass every Tuesday, weather permitting.

MATH

~It is important to identify and write all of our numerals up to 30.

~We can identify the amounts of coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter).

~Tell time to the hour

~We are also recognized and expand patters.  (number patterns, shape patterns, color

   patterns)

HANDWRITING:
We will be continually practicing our printing throughout the school year.  We know that printing can be frustrating.  Therefore, encourage your child to do their best.  It does not have to be perfect, just a good try.  Although it is often easier for a child to push a pencil from the bottom of the lines to the top, be sure to check that your child is printing their numbers and letters from the top of the printing lines to the bottom of the printing
