Welcome to Mr. Lail's 3rd Grade Class! I am so glad to be teaching 3rd Grade again this year at Isenberg! We are learning MANY exciting things this year and trying a variety of methods to teach my students. Here are somethings that we are working on or will be working on in the near future: Reading: Asking questions, Cause and Effect, Making Connections, Context Clues, Summarizing, and Main Idea & Details. Math: We are continuing to work on addition and subtraction. We are beginning to work on memorizing our multiplication facts!!!! Please work with your child at home on this essential skill. In the coming weeks, we will be working on Patterns, Shapes and Solids, Congruence & Symmetry and Fractions. Science: We are beginning to learn about Space including the planets, sun and moon. Social Studies: Relationships Between People and Geography and Qualities of Good Citizenship. Vocabulary is also a major focus this year. Students will be responsible for knowing a set of vocabulary words for each subject. Students will not be required to spell these words. However, they MUST know these definitions well. By expanding your child's vocabulary he or she will become a better reader which will help them on the EOG's but also become a much better student overall. We are continuing to work on the 12 Powerful Words! Your child must be able to say, spell, read, define and use each word in a sentence. The words are: Trace - outline Analyze - break it down Infer - read between the lines Evaluate - judge Formulate - build and create Describe - tell me all about it Support - back it up with details Explain - tell me why Summarize - give the short version Compare - tell how things are alike Contrast - tell how things are different Predict - think about the future ![]() Please be on the lookout for conference letters. Not all parents are required to have a conference so please look out for a letter from me. If you do not get a letter and would like a conference, please let me know so that we can schedule one.
Please make sure to check your child's behavior chart daily. Students are required to write down their homework each day and to get their behavior chart signed. This is a great way to teach them responsibility.
If you ever have any questions, concerns or comments, please feel free to email me: lailmo@rss.k12.nc.us , write me a note, or call the school and leave a message.
