Ms.Calvacca's Notes

Welcome to 3rd Grade!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you to my class. We have a wonderful and exciting year to look forward to. My classroom is a structured and safe environment that promotes learning, responsibility, and fun. I try to make each student feel special, and achieve the highest level of their abilities.  My door is always open, please feel free to stop by and introduce yourself.

Homework will be assigned Monday thru Thursday with no homework on Fridays. Students will write their homework for the week in their planners on Mondays. Please sign their planner every night. All completed classwork will be sent home on Fridays. See the attached page for a list of supplies needed for this year. Also, it can sometimes get cold in the classrooms so I recommend that students keep a jacket or sweater in their backpacks. If you have any questions, please contact me at the school. My email is acalvacca@somersetmiramar.com. I look forward to a fantastic year with you all!

                                            Sincerely,

                                           Ms.Calvacca

Upcoming Important dates:

Specials

**This year we are doing specials by the quarter. For the first quarter, we have Computers daily except for Thursdays which we have P.E.

Things you can do at home to encourage and improve reading skills:

·       Provide a selection of books for your child to read

·       Take a trip to the library- they have storytime as well as a large selection of books

·       Practice with flashcards to learn sight words or letters

·       Play word games- scrabble, boggle, crossword puzzles, word searches, etc.

·       Make greeting cards for friends and relatives

·       Let children create their own books

·       Utilize the internet for reading activities; a lot of  websites have phonics games and stories

·       Read to your child or take turns reading with them

·       Let children see you reading for pleasure- when they see adults reading for enjoyment, they are more likely to do the same

·       Use the task cards provided to guide children’s comprehension

·       Do word hunts- children look for a particular word or letter in a book, magazine, or newspaper

·       Have children keep a journal

·       Create a book club with other children who have the same interests

·       Do Mad Libs- these are always a lot of fun!

·       Use magnetic letters or stamps to make words

·       Ask questions about stories/articles you child has read; check for understanding

·       Have children predict what will happen next in a story

·       Have children retell you the story in their own words

·       Let children read to a stuffed animal or doll

·       Help them put on a play for your family

·       Allow them to read a recipe to you while you are cooking

·       Remember- you can never read too much!!!
