Environmental Symposium/ Environmental Club

2011-2012

Hi Everyone,

I will try to keep this page updated each week to keep you informed of the latest events, activities and WORK that the Environmental Symposium and Environmental Club students have been up to.  Here is a list of some of the work we do each year:

Computer refurb day by Greenshare Technology will be on Friday, March 23, 2012 - permission slips are due on Thursday

E-Waste collection project: Saturday Feb 4 - What a huge success!  We collected 3,780 lbs or 1.8 tons of e-waste and collected about 40 computers that will potentially be refurbished and made available to low income families or non-profit organizations.  What a great day.  Thanks to everyone who volunteered and to all those who donated their e-waste to our collection.

Student Summit 2012:  Thursday, May 24 in South Portland, ME.  More details pending

Solar Panels!:  Yes, the solar panels are now up and running! As part of a $93,000 grant from State Farm Lisbon Central School is going GREEN!  They are sitting on top of the media center and saving the school $$ on electricity costs.  Go Environmental!

The Haunted Nature Trail:  Environmental Pirates!  An interactive activity for students in grades 1-5 on Halloween Day.    Classes are invited out on the nature trail for an exciting environmental activity.  This activity is very popular!  The Reminder is scheduled to cover this event.  Great job organizers!  Come on out on the trail and check it out!

Schoolwide Recycling:  Office paper, corrugated cardboard, chipboard, milk cartons, bottles and cans are all recycled through the hard work of our 7th grade Environmental Club students.  Each Friday they do recycling pick-ups.

General Mills Boxtops for Education:  Box tops will be collected each Monday by a small group of Environmental Club students.  Money raised from these boxtops will help support environmental  and science work this year.  Please send your General Mills Boxtops for Education to your favorite homeroom teacher.  Winning homerooms will take part in the annual Boxtops Survivor Challenge - what a blast!

TerraCycle - Thanks to the good work of a couple "green" 5th grade girl scouts, the Environmental Club has now adopted the Terracycle program in which we collect Lays chip bags and juice boxes.  We've already collected thousands!  A litte extra $$ for our work and less waste in the dumpster

Composting - We now compost cafeteria food waste in the school's courtyard.  Not only is less food ending up in the garbage, we will also be producing rich compost for the gardens.  Check out the new composter in the courtyard which was constructed by Environmental Club members.  Job well done!

Brook Trout - We are raising Brook Trout in the classroom for the eventual release into Blissville Brook in Lisbon Meadows Park.  Hopefully we'll be establishing a trout population in Lisbon's Blissville Brook.

Wheelabrator's Environmental Symposium:  Each year Wheelabrator Technologies, Inc. of Lisbon invite our Environmental students to attend their symposium.  This year's symposium will be April 30-May 3  10 Environmental Symposium students will be selected for this prestigious event.  I'll keep you posted with updates.

Box Tops Survivor Contest.  Students should dress appropriately for this outdoor and active event.
