The kids enjoyed every minute of Catholic Schools Week.  They loved hearing about your careers, having 8th graders teach them math, doing an art project with the 6th graders and watching the Religion and Spelling Bees.  Spirit Day was the most fun for them.

The progress reports for the 2nd trimester went home this week.  Please be sure to sign and return them.  You keep the white copy.  You also need to return the form that asks if you would like to meet for a parent/teacher conference.  If you would like to come that night, we need to schedule a time.

The St. Jude's Math-a-thon begins today, February 6th.  Please participate in this charity to help the unfortunate children that are sick.

I would like to thank the parents that brought in school supplies for the classroom.  We are frequently running out and any help replenishing them is greatly appreciated!

Please make sure that your child does not bring any toys to school.  If they need to bring something for after school, remind them it needs to stay in their book bags until that time.

Terra Nova testing will be around March.  We have started the practice booklets for the test.  We practice the academics as well as the rules.  During the test, I will not be able to help them.  I can only read the questions to them.  They will not be able to get out of their seats for anything or make any noise.  They will have bathroom breaks before and after the testing.

In celebration of President's Day, our next book report will be about an American President.  They can choose from George Washington to President Obama.  Your child should write neatly and there should be at least one paragraph in each section.  The book report will be due Monday, March 5th.  Below is the code for parents to order from scholastic books online, you should be able to find a book there.  The book should be about 30 pages or more.

I also sent home scholastic book orders.  You can order online with the code below: http://www.scholastic.com/parents/       H9DFP

Academics

Religion - In Chapter 10 we are reading and discussing how to understand The Commandments and to live as God's children.

Social Studies - We have started Unit 4 in Social Studies.  In this unit we will learn about state, local and federal government.  We will discuss what it means to be a citizen of The United States and what it means to have freedom.  The students can bring home the textbook home on the weekends to study a little at a time.

Science - We have started Chapter 4 in which we will learn about different life cycles, growing and changing.

In Math we are learning how to add two-digit numbers with regrouping, estimating, three addends and mental math.  We are close to the end of the chapter.  The next test will be Friday, February 10th.  The next chapter will cover subtracting two-digit numbers.  There is a review at the end of every 5 lessons before we have the chapter test.    Their is a mini lesson on the top of each workbook page.

In Grammar we are learning verbs.  We will be learning the verb tenses, subject/verb agreement and being verbs.

We have started to learn the basics of cursive writing.  We will begin learning to write the lowercase letters this month, starting with the letters i and t.

Below is how our grading system works:

E - Exceeds

S - Satisfactory

D - Developing

B - Beginning

N - Needs Improvement

We are collecting box tops and cambell soup labels.  Please collect as many as you can and sent them in to support the school.  The class who collects the most wins a free dress down day!
