This week we will be working on:

Reading:  We are finishing our flyer to visit the Land of Opt- an imaginary city where seeing is believing or not!  The students were introduced to optical illusions.

We are reading Max Malone.  There are two themes.  One is how two friends show kindness to a sick friend.  The other involves finding a clever way to make some money.  In Math we used our bag of change to work on a shopping game and seeing what we could buy.  In Math we will play a game at Computer lab that will help them to learn how to make change.

Writing:     We are working on writing a personal narrative recalling a time when they helped someone and showed an act of kindness.  First, we are making a draft to include many details and then they will write their paragraphs.  They will work with a partner to proofread, using a handout evaluating how to write a sentence and checking punctuation and capitalization.

Book Report:  A handout was distributed with the assignment for our next book report.  The theme is folktales/fairytales.   The assessment includes creating a puppet (sock, marionette, finger or on a stick), presenting the plot and characters in front of class with the puppet, answering questions, coloring a picture from the book, and illustrating 5 new vocabulary words.  The report is due October 13th.

Grammar:  We are working on combing sentences and  identifying  correct punctuation.

Phonics and Spelling:  Distinguish homonyms, antonyms, and synonyms and determine the spelling of the words that sound alike.

Religion:  In our book we are reading about customs of the Church and we are discussing customs of our family's culture, especially for celebrations of holidays.  For the Heart of St. Bartholomew Auction we are making a quilt using this theme.  We chose and will illustrate special celebrations from all the countries of our families.

In our weekly publication, Good News, we will be reading about the Sunday's Gospel, reading a story about welcoming everyone to play, and playing a game in small groups that helps us to find many ways to make a person feel welcome.

Math:  We are reviewing different functions using money,  place value, and will begin multiplication.  It is important for every student to have mastered addition and subtraction in order to succeed in multiplication.  Please practice the multiplication facts that are written in the child's notebook each night .

Thusday I will be handing out papers from Book It sponsored by Pizza Hut.  It will include a new calendar to record reading out loud 15 minutes a day to a parent .  Please send in your child's September calendar signed. Research shows that the more your child reads, the better chance your child will have in succeeding in school. This also gives you a chance to help them sound out new words and increase their vocabulary.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or send a note in their assignment notebook.  Please sign these notebooks daily after checking their completed assignments.

                            Thank you for your support,

                                           Ms Judy
