HW Have an independent reading book for Tuesday. . . and every day ________________________________________________ Word Within the Word Advanced Vocab This is vocabulary-building, curriculum that is complex, demanding, erudite and witty. It provides internalized, maximum, meaningful, impact at the time students take SSATs and SATs. It is a program that heavily uses etymology, not memorization. Words are presented as a system of thinking, a way of building, analyzing, spelling, pronouncing, using and choosing words. The beauty of this approach is that students will know far more than the list of words encountered in this course, the tens of thousands of words which are not listed, but which are expressions of the system. Lessons are intended as a weekly effort; all the succeeding volumes build on a cumulative basis. Every test reinforces every list. Through constant review, ever increasing familiarity is built. This is a tremendously wonderful undertaking that combines learning and fun. Volume I covers lessons 1-30 with 500 word stems, both Greek and Latin, followed by 250 words made of those stems. The term "stem" includes all word pieces: prefixes, suffixes, and roots. ____________________________________________________ Welcome to 7th grade LA! I'm looking forward to a great year!!!! I post classwork and homework on here weekly, and often update it daily. To start the year, here are some things you are probably wondering about: Class rules 1. Be punctual and prepared. 2. Follow all directions. 3. Raise your hand if you wish to speak. 4. Respect people, respect property. 5. Always do your best! Students are expected to remember the Daniels philosophy "Do the Blue" Be kind and respectful Lead by example Utilize responsible work ethic Establish a safe environment Daily class procedures: 1. Enter the room in an orderly manner and go directly to your assigned seat. 2. Take out your homework and begin working on the daily warm-up. 3. If you need to sharpen your pencil, do so, and be back in your seat before class begins. 4. When the teacher closes the door, everyone should stop talking and be focused on the warm-up activity. 5. When leaving the class for ANY reason you must have a pass. 6. No eating, drinking or chewing gum in class. Bathroom and locker policy: Students have 4 minutes in-between each class to go to their lockers and use the bathroom. Students will be given 4 emergency passes each trimester. If they use more than the 4 they will make up the classtime missed during lunch. "While you were out. . ." 1. If you are absent from school on the day an assignment is due or a test/quiz is taken, you are responsible for turning in that assignment and/or arranging a time to make-up your test/quiz. 2. All late work will get a minimum of 7 points deducted. This only applies to absences when the student has failed to turn in their work within the three day time limit. IRR (independent reading log) 1. Students are expected to have their self-selected reading book with them every day. We will have SSR (self-selected reading) time in class; students with no book will see this reflected in their classwork grade for the day. 2. Students are expected to read 60-90 minutes a week. This will be checked EVERY FRIDAY. Supplies: LA binder OR LA section of binder notebook paper pens and pencils Grading policy major assessments- tests, projects= 35% classwork/participation/warm-up= 25% minor assessments- quizzes= 30% homework, agenda checks= 10%
Again, welcome to 7th grade LA! I'm looking forward to a great year!!!!
