Over all it was a wonderful turn out. I really enjoy getting a chance to meet parents and share with you what we are doing with your student everyday! If you did not get a chance to come, please stop by the school, say hello, and sign your technology agreement. 11-2-2009 begins the next grading period. If you are pleased with your grades for the first period then CONGRATULATIONS keep it up :), if not...you still have another chance so do your best. To calculate your final grade the 2 grading periods and your final exam are averaged together. Lets work together to reach your goals! Lesson Updates: Unit 2 Reminder!!!! Turn in ALL assignments to the IN box on the date due (usually the next day). 10-1-2009 Cookie Mining Lab - the purpose of this lab was to develop inquiry skills and to gain a respect for Earth's economy and finite resources. Assessment - You should have turned in your spreadsheet of data and 9 guiding/followup questions. Questions should be submitted neatly on a separate sheet of paper in complete sentences. 10-2,5-2009 Plate Tectonics - Theory or Fact? - Today in class we reviewed prior knowledge of plate tectonics including the theorists, some vocabulary, and suggested evidence to prove the theory. Assessment - A mini research project was assigned today and will be presented on Tuesday of next week. Groups were given a profession (a type of scientist) to "become". You are to research plate tectonics from the perspective of your new profession. Provide evidence to support the theory using only evidence from your perspective! Tuesday you will present to a "council". The presentation must persuade the council that your evidence is the most convincing. For more detail about this assessment please check your student Gaggle email account. Please feel free to email me with any questions over the weekend. I will do my best to check in periodically. Good luck to all of you new scientists. I am very excited to see what you come up with!! :) 10-6-2009 Presentation Day - Presentations for the Plate Tectonics research were today. Over all it was a success! Remember for future presentations to look and act professional, if you use a Keynote or Powerpoint do not put to many words on a slide so that you are reading to the class, and be sure you really KNOW your information before standing up in front of a class. Hats off to the couple of groups who stepped out of their comfort zone and made video's and podcasts!! 10-7,8 - 2009 Discussion Topic - Earthquakes: What they are? How they occur? Why they occur? Assessment - Choose 2 of 3 assignments to complete by end of class 10-8: article, virtual lab, string lab 10-9-2009 Activity - Unit 2 test review *****test Monday*****Good Luck :) atoms, molecules, elements, molecular structure, bonding, mineral properties, rocks, rock cycle, finite resources, earthquakes, plate tectonics 10-12-2009 Test on unit 2 today. Tomorrow begins our unit on hydrosphere. 10-13-2009 Discussion - Today begins unit 3 on the hydrosphere with a Keynote about the water cycle Activity - Become a water molecule and trace your personal journey through the cycle using dice for randomness. Include data about changes of state, energy required, and contamination collected along the way. Assessment - Create a story, picture, or other creative means to illustrate your journey (in detail). We will continue to work on this in class tomorrow. 10-15-2009 Discussion - Yesterday we began to talk about river and stream sources, flow, velocity, and carrying capacity. Today we continued that discussion and I introduced you to the virtual river discharge lab. Assessment - Together we worked our way through the virtual lab collecting data, making measurements of velocity, depth, and discharge. We did not complete the lab and will continue working tomorrow. 10-16-2009 Discussion - review what stream discharge is and how we calculate velocity and discharge Assessment - Complete the lab and submit the certificate of completion to me. Most of you did really well with this lab! Congratulations :) Have a wonderful weekend. 10-19-2009 Discussion - Important rivers across the world. What do we use rivers for and how do other cultures use rivers now and in the past? This explains why it is important for us to study a rivers ecology and water quality. Activity - Active "gallery walk" about 6 important rivers. You are responsible for information on all 6 rivers, not just the 1 you read and presented about. 10-20-2009 Discussion - Rivers can contain different levels of pollutants that can contribute to over all water quality and ecology. Taking a sample of the macroinvertebrates present can give us a better idea of the level of health of a river. There are different types of these organisms that are tolerant of different levels of pollution. Today we discussed these organisms and what information they have to offer us. Activity - I gave you a "stream sample" to analyze. In the activity you had to determine what the macroinvertebrates present were and how many of them were present. Based on the number of each type you could calculate an index number that leads to a water quality assessment. Assessment - Turn in your water sample data, index number calculations, and water quality level. 10-21,22-2009 Discussion - Rivers are not only affected by their natural environment. Humans play a huge role both negative and positive. We discussed pollution, dams, hydroelectricity, etc.....all the ways the humans and water interact. Activity - You were broken up into groups of 3 or 4 and given a specific twist on human and water interaction to research. The requirement of the activity was to create a public announcement to inform people about the positives and negatives of water quality. Assessment - Creation of a video public announcement. Think of a TV commercial format, but more informative than persuasive. The requirements are a script (with valid complete information), use of props, and a video recording. Be detailed and use good information but try to have a little fun with it and be creative! 10-23-2009 Today was homecoming! There were several absences in 1st block, and 4th block was taken up by the pep rally so we did not film today. We will do it on Monday. 3rd block did film and did a great job! I will put your videos into iMovie so that we can have a show and tell next week. Have a wonderful weekend! :) 10-26,27-2009 Discussion - We watched and discussed classmates final product of the videos made. Then we discussed what our government is doing to protect our water sources. We went over the CWA, Clean Water Act and all that it covers and watched a news clip and read an article about how cleaning the air can in fact pollute our water. Assessment - 12 questions concerning the CWA. Questions were gaggle mailed to you along with the links to the necessary information sources. 10-28,29-2009 Discussion - Application of information learned about CWA, stream velocity and discharge, and pollution/water quality. Activity - A virtual lab provided by SAS in schools. This lab lets you practice collecting data, make graphs, and interpret data about real life situations. I really like this lab because you get to practice data collection using a modeled format then you get to design your own experiment using real situations. This answers the question most of you have "When will this stuff we learn in class ever be used in real life?" Assessment - Answer the questions in the lab manual and make a graph of your data. 1st and 3rd block need to turn in this by the beginning of class on Monday! 4th block was shortened today and for that I am sorry, you need a little more guidance and we will work on this and complete in in class on Monday. If you want to try it own your own to see if you can figure it out go ahead. :) Have a great break see you later. 11-2,3-2009 Discussion - Ocean chemistry and movement - How is the ocean important to us? What are the physical characteristics of the ocean? What is the Coriolis effect? What makes the ocean move and how? Look at live current and tidal data. How do we get this data and who collects it? Why is it important? Assessment - Questions following the current tutorial on the NOAA website 11-4-2009 Discussion - Unit 3 test review 11-5-2009 Unit 3 - The Hydrosphere - final assessment 11-6-2009 Discussion - New technology responsibilities and requirements. Be sure you each have access to the schoolnotes page, student gaggle email, and my class ning. Realize that the technology is a privilege not a right. It is a tool to enhance your learning it is not a substitute for your own thoughts. Assessment - Add a post to the discussion board on the ning ***Remender..it is Friday....did you turn in your bellringer/reflection journal? Last home game GO CAVS 11-9&11-2009 Discussion - Welcome to unit 4 - The Atmosphere Today we discussed some introduction information including atmosphere composition, layers, and condition. Activity/Assessment - You were broken up into groups to research and discuss the past present and future of our atmosphere. How was is created? What is it currently like? and What will it be like in the future? Each group pulled a presentation software out of the hat. Either Comic Life, Inspiration time line, or Flip Chart. We will work on this project today and Thursday. I will not be in class tomorrow 11-10-2009 and have left a reading and fill in the blank notes assignment in my absence. Please turn in your work from the 10'th for assessment. 11-16-2009 Discussion - We discussed weather patterns and forecasting today in class. Information included air masses, weather station models, types of weather maps, data collection technology, clouds, and fronts. Assessment - I emailed you an assignment that has to view examples of different weather maps and answer some questions about them. It will be due at the beginning of class tomorrow. 11-17,18-2009 Discussion - Thunderstorms were the topic of today. We reviewed what types of maps might show storms and their development. New to the discussion were the forces, stages, types, and safety measures of a storm. I have placed my notes online if you would like me to bookmark them on your iPod please see me and I will gladly do that for you! Assessment - You were assigned to make a "menu for a storm". Menu meaning to format the information like a menu with separate sections for different types of information and pictures to illustrate. Information to include: forces, 3 stages, severity, hazards, and safety |
