Welcome to Mrs. Kearney's Class Page!
We have been working extra hard in first grade! We will be talking about Thanksgiving this week and into our 2 day week next week.

Math:
We will be voting for our favorite Thanksgiving foods. The students will use this data in order to make a bar graph. We will also be using pattern blocks to create turkeys and graphing the amount of shapes we used. Students will also be playing the game "Roll a Turkey" with dice. During math centers, students will use various other math skills such as number word recognition, building and identifying 3D shapes, using pictures and tally marks to represent data, etc. |
Writing:
Students will be sharing their Favorite Season pieces with the class on Monday! These pieces turned out great! The students all worked extremely hard on their writing conventions. Our new writing pieces will be about Thanksgiving traditions. We will discuss differences and similarities between our traditions! Students will also be writing about things they are thankful for. During writer's workshop, we are practicing our editing skills and have begun writing longer pieces of work in booklets. We are practicing "talking across our fingers" by saying a topic for our palm and a sentence for each finger. We will be focusing on Small Moments during Writer's Workshop. Ask your child about the great writing creations they have been working so hard on! |
Reading: We will be reading a selection of both fiction and nonfiction books about Thanksgiving, Turkeys, and Pilgrims. We will continue to review our letters and high frequency words from kindergarten and adding new words each week! We are also practicing reading and sounding out words with short vowel sounds. Continue to work with your child on these words each night. |
Science/Social Studies: This week we will continue to learn about Holidays and Special Celebrations. We will learn the history of the very first Thanksgiving day feast. We will compare and contrast the traditions of the first feast to our modern day celebrations. We will even be making our own butter! We will also continue to learn about owls for our IMPACT project. Students will visit the computer lab on Friday to graph the school wide vote for the favorite animal. |
Spelling Words: many, then, them, these, so, trip, crab, drip, grin, grab, trap.
*Because we are working on mastering all 100 high frequency words in first grade, I will be including previously learned spelling words on each spelling test. Please take the time to go over these words with your child!
