What we've bee doing in 2nd Grade

During this first quarter the students and I  have been getting to know each other.  We have learned about each other and the things that are  most important to us.  The following is a list we came up with together as a class that helps you to understand what we are learning while we are in school.  Please take a couple of minutes to read each one.  Thanks.


Language Arts
Our first Theme for Language Arts was called "Silly Stories".  We learned that there is a difference between reality and fantasy.  We are now able to distinguish between them by looking at the characteristics  in a story.  We know animals can't talk so most likely the story is going to be Fantasy. We are still learning about our long and short vowels and word blends.  We are also learning how to write good sentences.  

Math
We are building on our addition and subtraction skills.  We have learned about fact families and related facts.  We have also used our comparing skills to make connections between numbers and problem solve.  We are really enjoying this!

Social Studies
In Social Studies we have learned about our community and the people in it.  We have  discovered the amazing volunteers we see everyday but yet never recognized everything they do for us.  We really enjoyed writing about these volunteers.

Science
We learned our very first BIG word!!!  "HYPOTHESIS"  We not only learned how to say it, but we learned what it was and created one.  We could explain it better than say it at first. 

Writer's Workshop
We have learned in writing that each moment we live can be written about.  These are our memory writings. We really have had fun drawing, writing and telling our stories.
