Class Rules and Grading Policies

HOW TO GET AN ‘A’ IN ENGLISH CLASS
(These rules and procedures will be modified, whenever necessary, to comply with recommendations contained in any Individual Education Plan for a specific student) Everyone starts out with an “A” in this class, but it is up to you to keep it. Here’s how: DEADLINES: Turn all your work in on the date it is due. Points will be deducted for late Work. Work that is more than one week past due will receive a zero. MAKE-UP WORK: If you are absent, or you miss class due to a music lesson, you should use STAR time to find out what you missed and make up the work. Work from an absence should generally be completed within 3 days of your return to school. Of course, if you have been absent for an extended period, the Core teachers will work together to schedule due dates for make up work so that you will not be overwhelmed. GRADES: Class work: 15% Participate: Be in your seat on time, stay seated unless you have permission to do otherwise, answer questions, volunteer to read, ask questions, listen carefully to directions, encourage your classmates, stay focused, and follow all class rules. Always do your best work. If you need help, just ask. I will schedule time for extra help as needed, or you can come for help during your STAR period. If a question arises when you are working on something at home, you can e-mail through my website. Be Prepared: Have all materials that are necessary for class work, such as books, pencils, paper or other assignment ready as soon as you enter the class. Work to the best of your ability. Any writing or activity done in class will be considered as class work. Complete homework assignments on time. Homework will be given on Monday through Thursday only, and only occasionally on Friday when special circumstances require it. Homework will include reading, studying for tests and quizzes, work on long-term writing assignments and projects. (See “Quizzes” section on the next page with respect to further information on grading the homework.) Writing: 30% The Writing portion of your grade will include the longer and more complex writing assignments, and pieces of writing produced in your writer’s workshops. These may include essays, short stories, speeches, plays, and some poetry. We will have approximately three writing assignment each quarter. These longer and more complex writing assignments receive direct instruction during Writer's Workshop. To find out more about Writer's Workshop, click on the link below. Quizzes: 20% There will be vocabulary, spelling, grammar, comprehension and other quizzes as needed. You will have at least three days notice of any quiz. There will be approximately 4 quiz grades per quarter. In addition, students will receive one quiz grade for Homework, Organization, and Preparation each quarter. All students will begin each quarter with a score of 100% on this "HOP" quiz. Any time you are late turning in a homework assignment, five points will be deducted from your HOP quiz grade. Similarly, if you fail to bring in the necessary books or materials to class, five points will be deducted. Projects and Tests: 25% There will be 1 -2 tests or projects each quarter. You will have at least one week notice of a test. You will receive a study guide for each test, and we will spend some class time reviewing for each test, but it is strongly suggested that you follow this up with further study at home. Projects will include library research, reports and other long-term assignments. Instructions and expectations for projects will be available as projects are assigned. Each project will carry the weight of one test. Independent Reading: 10%. Read, read, read! See the Independent Reading Program for details. ALL FINAL WORK WILL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE “STANDARDS FOR WRITTEN WORK”, A COPY OF WHICH IS ATTACHED. IN ADDITION, FINAL WORK MUST BE GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT AND CONTAIN NO SPELLING ERRORS. In addition to the above, students will be challenged to be successful in class by being prepared, well-behaved, attentive, and respectful. Students who follow all class rules, exhibit good study skills and positive attitude toward themselves and their peers will have an opportunity to earn success tickets. Each ticket earned can be entered into a drawing that will be held every two months. The prizes awarded at the drawing include candy, pencils, erasers, pens and other small items. STANDARDS FOR WRITTEN WORK *All work must be completed in pencil or black or blue ink. No gel pens please! *Your work must be neat and legible. *All final drafts must be typewritten or written in cursive in ink. * Please keep a one inch margin around all sides of the paper * Your name, the date and your class period must appear in the upper right hand corner of your paper, just below the top margin.
