What’s Happening…

In Reading/Literacy Centers your child will be reading st    ories from the Around Town theme in the basal.  The titles are Chinatown, A Trip to the Firehouse and Jamaica Louise James.  Students will learn new strategies to help him or her improve comprehension.  We will be doing word work with phonemes, spelling, fluency and phonics.  Ask your child questions about the selections he or she is reading at home.

In Math students will be learning about shapes,symmetry and congruence.  Lessons on measurement will also be taught this month.  Second graders should be able to tell time to five minute increments, and measure using standard and non-standard units.  Math fact mastery of addition and subtraction facts to 18 is essential.  

In Science our unit of study is sound.  Students will learn about vibration, pitch and loudness of sound.  On December 19 our field trip to Horizons will further hands-on experience with Science learning.

Mrs. Perry, our Academically Gifted teacher, is making her rounds to each of the second grade classes.  She is engaging boys and girls in creative thinking lessons. Writing lessons will continue to focus on student ability to plan and write a complete story.   Stories should have a clear beginning, middle and end.  Writing stories with elaborate details in paragraph form is our goal.  We are using the Lucy Caulkin’s Writer’s Workshop to grow wonderful authors.
