Hege's  Hedgehogs

Thanks for visiting our First Grade Classroom

Wow!!! I am so excited to have your child in my classroom this year. I can't wait to see their faces when they learn something for the first time. First grade is such a milestone and is one of the most important grades as your child will get their foundations. I am blessed to have the opporunity to lead them into their learning adventure. Please come back to this site often as I will have all sorts of important things for you!

Rules

As part of our morning routine at Hanford Dole, we recite the pledge below. This year I have decided that our classroom rules are going to be the same as the school rules. Students know these rules by heart and they know that in order to have a wonderful school day they must abide by them.

3 R's Pledge

Respect- I will show respect for myself and others.

Responsibility- I will be responsible for my actions.

Right Thing- I will do the right thing.

Things that we can do in our classroom to have a terrific day are as follows;

I can raise my hand to speak.

I can listen carefully to the teacher when she is teaching.

I can follow directions the first time they are given.

I can respect my classroom by keeping my area clean.

I can turn in my homework and other work during the day.

I can always do my best.

Rewards for having a terrific day

In our class, tokens will be awarded to the children who exhibit the 3 R's. Your child will have a specific token with their own number. We will have many of them to give out.  If the child receives a token, the token will be put in our class token bag. Tokens will not be awarded every single time, but I will surprise students and they will never know when they will have a token added to the bag. If a child asks for a token, he will not be given one, no matter how good of a job he did. This will ensure that students are showing exemplar behavior because it is expected and not to earn a token.

Using our token system will give each student the opportunity to help the teacher and receive praise as well as small prizes for exhibiting excellent behavior. I will pull tokens every Friday as well as anytime during the week as a reward to help me around the class or also recieve a small prize. The more tokens your child puts in the bag, the greater chance of receiving a reward.

If your child's token is pulled from the bag this is what they may expect.

*Praise from the teacher verbally or note to the student or parent.

*Pick a partner to sit with at lunch.

*Treat from our treasure box.

*Computer Pass.

*Homework Pass.

Consequences for having a not so terrific day

Warning 1- verbal/non verbal cue to the student to change behavior as well as a reminder on their desk.

Warning 2 -verbal/non verbal cue to the student to change behavior as well as a reminder for student on their desk to change behavior.

Warning 3-Time Away- Student will have some time alone to think about how to change their behavior. This can be done during class, at lunch, or at recess depending on situation.

Warning 4- Note/Phone call- Parent will receive a note or phone call depending on the severity of the behavior.

Principal referral- If the student still refuses to work on their behavior there will be a discipline referral written in order for the Principal to review.

***Please note- In some circumstances if the student continues to make poor choices ,they may be placed on a behavior plan in order to focus on a certain area of their day and help them make better choices. Parents will be notified if this happens and will be asked to come in for a conference in order to discuss ways to help them change the behavior.

Group Rewards

Students will also receive rewards as a whole class for behavior throughout the year. This will be done by use of a marble jar. Anytime we receive a compliment or our class exhibits excellent behavior we will get marbles added to the jar. We will have class celebrations such as cupcakes, pizza, popcorn, etc.

Classroom Procedures

Thursday Folders- We will send these home on Thursdays and they are expected back on Friday. Please review your child's work for the week and feel free to keep it. There will also be important communication from our school included.

Monday Folders- These folders will come home on Monday with your child's graded work from the week before. This will include spelling tests, reading comprehension tests, AM and AR tests, etc. Please look over your child's work and sign the paper in the folder. This work MUST RETURN TO SCHOOL.

Visitors- We always welcome visitors at Hanford Dole Elementary. Please know that in order to maximize student learning we need to know in advance of any visit so that it does not cause a disruption to our students. Also, if you want to eat lunch with your child please visit the office for a visitor's tag and come on down. Parents will not come back to the classroom after lunch as we will be working very hard. Thank you.

Homework- Students will receive their homework on Monday and it will need to be turned in on Thursday. Your child will learn how important responsibility is by turning this in on Thursday.

Reading at Home- Students will need to read their baggie book each night. More specific information will be sent home for you. Parents will need to record this each night in their child's homework folder. This will then be turned in with homework on Thrursday.

Agenda- You will need to sign this each and every night. This is such an imporant tool in communication during the year. I will check this daily for your signature as well as if you have left me any notes. I look forward to your notes and also getting to send them home to you.

Baggie Books- Each day your child will receive a book based on their DRA levels. This is the book we will use for Reading at Home as well as during our silent reading time. You will need to read this book to them and also listen to then read the book to you. Please sign the log and return it each day. We will then get them a new book when they return the next day.
