                           Ms. Hatley's 2nd Grade

Welcome!
We have had a great start, and now that the book fair is over, we can start accelerated reading.  The students check out two books, read them five times each, then test to see if they understood what they read.  This is called reading comprehension, and aside from being able to read, it is extremely important.  If you do not understand what you read,  you will not be able to do work in class, or in life.  This goes along with our reading assignments in class.  We have spelling words that come from the stories that we read.
I outlined all of this in my parent letter that went home.  If you need another copy, let me know.
In math, we have just finished single-digit addition and subtraction.  We will start place value, ( ones, tens, hundreds), numbers to 1,000,  odd/even, greater than-less than, estimation, venn diagrams, and pictographs.  At the same time, we will be working on two-digit addition and subtraction.  Being able to add and subtract is the foundation of all math.
Parents, go to the dollar stores and buy add/sub flashcards and practice with your child.  It's fun, and your child will benefit greatly from it.
In social studies, we are learning about social environments like playgrounds, parks, scouts, etc., and how to be a good citizen by participating in them.  Communities are also being discussed, because social environments are found in communities.
Science is a blast!  We are looking at plants under the microscope, and the students are very excited.  They learned that plants have tiny hairs, patterns, and a root system.

I am very pleased with the progress we have made.
If you have concerns or questions,  call and leave a message on  my voice mail at 704 216 0273, or write in your child's agenda.

Let's ride the wave to success!

Sincerely,
Ms. Hatley
