Lesson Essential Question: How can I use the reading process to help me become a better reader?

1.        Think about the word “reading”.  What comes to mind?  List words or phrases-anything you think of.  You must list at least 10 words or phrases.

2.       Think about why we read.  Why do you think all kids are taught to read?  Why is it so important?  Write your answers in a complete sentence.

3.       When thinking about why we read/what we read, reading can be broken down into four distinct categories:

Academic:  This is about education.  Your teacher usually tells you to read these things.

Personal:  This is the reading you choose to do for your own enjoyment or personal growth.

Workplace:  This involves things you will have to read in order to hold/keep a job.

Functional:  This involves informational reading you do every single day.

Make a four column notes graphic organizer.  Head each column with the above four areas.  List examples under each category of things you could read/find under each category.  You must list at least 5 in each.

Example:

Academic                            Personal                              Workplace                          Functional
