May/June 2012 Dear Room 7 Parents, Wow, how can the school year go by any faster? We are so prideful of what we accomplish every day. It is a tremendous honor to work with a great group of students and parents. Our students should be very proud of themselves for the tremendous growth in all their subject areas. Many thanks to the energetic parent-teachers who volunteer to enrich and support our classroom with wonderful and exciting activities throughout the school year. We have the best parents at Caleb Greenwood School! Each day is a fantastic day! May 1-10 is the California Standards Test (STAR). Our students will work through them like champs! We have one of the smartest classes. We do ask that each student be on time to class each morning. May 4 is the school fundraising dinner at the Dante Club. May 14 (Monday) is our bus field trip to Fog Willow Farm in Elk Grove. Parents are welcome to come and join in on the fun. Please have your student return their permission slip. Remember to bring walking shoes and a sack lunch that day. May 30 (Wednesday evening in room 7) is the Caleb Greenwood Open House. Please plan to attend as the students will have many of their projects on display. Everyone is invited to attend. Be careful of the volcano in room 7! Look forward to a room 7 yearbook that highlights pictures and activities of our second graders. (Ask Mr. Myers to see samples from previous Room 7 classes.) We had quite a proud program this year of classroom activities and just a lot of fun stuff to go along with dedicated, focused learning. It is a definite keepsake of the memories of second grade. We plan to keep the cost of this book to a minimum. During the last week of school we will celebrate by walking to Glen Hall Park and have a picnic day filled with friends, food, and fun. A flyer/email will be coming soon to ask for munchies for this event. Thanks again for all the snack donations throughout the school year. The students always look forward to their snack. Dear Room 7 Parents, Did everyone enjoy their spring break? We are looking forward to a healthy and happy third trimester of school. We plan to gear up for Open House projects. Our theme will be dinosaurs! Our students started projects to display this spring. Some of their projects include a ceramic dinosaur, fossil imprints (hand/foot), chalk art, water color art, pyramid diorama, geo cube, and many more. We truly appreciate all the parent contributions. Many thanks to those that are working on the Auction/Dinner Night. Also, to all the parent-teachers that help out in the classroom-you are a cherished group. It’s what makes our school special. For our current school fundraiser our class can earn a pizza party for selling enough raffle tickets for the Auction/Dinner Night. If our students sell enough tickets we earn a lunch time pizza party. March 28 was an exciting event at the school cafeteria. Explorit Family Science from Davis, along with Caleb Greenwood staff, set up various science interactive hands-on lessons to explore. We saw many room 7 students at this fun activity. March 30 was our class party to celebrate Easter/Springtime. We had a wonderful time thanks to all the parents who helped supervise and brought in special treats. May 4 is the school Spring Fling Auction Night at the Dante Club. Please plan to attend to help raise money for the many wonderful school activities at Caleb Greenwood. Mr. Myers and Mrs. Moseley will offer a special ice cream treat at a local creamery to the winning bidder. If you can volunteer to help out for this event please contact Ms. Ginger at gingers@surewest.net. May 14 our class will take a school bus field trip to Fog Willow Farms to study science. Dear Room 7 Parents,
How wonderful is our class this year? The students are great and we continue to have super parent volunteers for all sorts of enriched activities, correcting papers, at-home projects, and fundraising support. Our hats off to the fantastic parents of room 7! Our third Benchmark Assessment shows good academic improvement for our class. We need to keep up the good growth in preparation for the CST in May. Reading Fluency scores are also improving. Our read aloud story this month is Boxcar Children #3 The Yellow House Mystery. February was Spring School Pictures. Send no money until after you see the photos that will be sent home soon. Please return photos that are not purchased. Feb.27-Mar. 2 was parent conferences/minimum days. If you child is progressing satisfactorily in school this was an optional parent-teacher conference. March 7 our classroom will have a presentation about ducks and other wildlife by the Wetlands Organization of Sacramento. March 28 is the school wide Science Night in the cafeteria. Please plan to attend as there are many hands-on science related activities for young students. March 30 is our Spring/Easter Celebration in room 7. More details will follow. Please save a shoebox for an at home project called “Diorama”. More details will be forthcoming. Thanks again for all the class snack donations each month of the school year. Dear Room 7 Parents, Isn’t the dawn of spring each year a wonderful time? The plants begin to bloom as well as the academic and social growth of our students. Isn't it such a pleasure to watch the wonderful change that occurs each day? There are many exciting things scheduled at school for this spring. Tuesday, February 14 is our room 7 Valentine’s Day Party . Parents are welcome to come and join in the fun. Students should write a classmate’s name on each Valentine’s Card. We sent a class roster home to help with this project. Later that evening is the annual Daughter Dance in the school cafeteria. February 13 and 20 are school holidays for students. January 2012 Dear Room 7 Parents,
We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful winter vacation. Is everyone well-rested for the upcoming New Year? The month of December was filled with fun activities. Our parent volunteers deserve a huge thank you for all the help during the month. Our wonderful parents continue to offer terrific help with our children. During December parents helped with our Winter Holiday Show, Wonderful Woodshop Lessons, Science Lessons, Holiday Art, Ceramic Projects, Gingerbread House Activity, and much more. We are truly blessed with great parent helpers! Here is a head’s up: Beginning in January your child’s spelling list will become a bit more difficult. We conclude the short vowel words and now embark on more complicated spellings like long vowel and multiple syllabic words. If your child has a good spelling homework routine there should not be a problem. However, if there is not a good homework routine with spelling there could be a little struggle with the more complicated words when we test each Friday. DECEMBER 2011 Dear Room 7 Parents, Did everyone have an enjoyable Thanksgiving break? It is always a time to reflect and give thanks for the good things we have, like a very nice and kind group of second graders. We also give thanks to the great group of parents that are so willing to help out, volunteer, and do the things that make our school so special this school year. We also appreciate the time we spent together during parent-teacher conference last month. It was so nice to get to know you and your child a little better. It will help to make the rest of the year go so much smoother. Thanks again for taking time in your schedule to meet with us. December is a busy month filled with many exciting activities. DECEMBER 10 is our school HOLIDAY BREAKFAST and 5K fun run. DECEMBER 21 at 7:00PM in the school cafeteria our second graders will sing Holiday Songs for the Holiday Performance. Please save this date and plan to attend. (Second and Third graders will perform at this time.) Remember to have your child wear their best Winter Holiday clothes that evening for the show. DECEMBER 23 is our winter class party. More information will be emailed soon. Plan to join us or help out that date from 1:00-2:00pm. DECEMBER 26-JANUARY 6 will be our WINTER BREAK. NOVEMBER 2011 Dear Room 7 Parents, First and foremost we applaud the parent volunteers in room seven this year. It is a great group that spends time in class with your child. We even have two grandparents (retired educators) that grace our classroom each week to help out. Our hats are off to you! October 21 our students went on a walking field trip. Numerous parents joined us to explore and discover the wonderful trees at the Sac State Arboretum. We learned a lot, worked in teams, and had a good time during our “Tree Hunt”. October 28 our class participated in a festive fun Friday. Our parent leaders for the Halloween activity, along with several other parents, put on quite a Halloween event. Everyone enjoyed a special “spooky” time. November 11 is Veteran’s Day and no school. November 9-18 are minimum days for parent conferences. Student dismissal time is 12:00pm on those days. Parents, please make every effort to attend the parent conference on time. Due to the class-size increase we schedule 20 minute conferences without any breaks (for the teacher). Thank you for your patience in advance if your conference start time is a bit late. We will make every effort to conduct the conferences in a well-prepared and timely way. Some parents ask if it is alright for their child to attend the conference. It is alright with me. November 21-25 is the Fall /Thanksgiving Break...this is a little different this year as the Monday and Tuesday of that week will be no school due to district calendar change. OCTOBER 2011 Dear Parents, How great is our class this year? We have a wonderful group. We have some of the kindest and nicest students ever. Thank you for attending our Back to School Night on Sep. 28. It is good to see so many involved parents. We already have many parent contributions that are appreciated. We now have a computer monitor, large shelf, class snacks, watermelon and many other items that our awesome parents donated this year. Our parents rock! Our Apple Hill field trip will be replaced by a walking field trip to the Sac State Arboretum for a "Tree Hunt" on Friday, October 21. We will get into teams that day and see how many trees we can find and identify in the beautiful arboretum. If any parents can help supervise please notify Mr. Myers. This event will take place from 8:45-11:30am. Refunds from the Apple Hill trip will be in your child's Wednesday Folder (unless you notify Mr. Myers that you want to contribute your refund towards refreshments for the October 21 walking field trip). How is homework going with your child? The goal of homework is for the child to do as much as possible in an independent manner. Let Mr. Myers know if there are any accommodations needed with the homework. In classroom during school time we continue to work on the two most important characteristics that make a successful person: "grit" and "self-control". We also develop activities that explore the strong connection between the concept of play and how it increases learning ability. Please bring in your empty cereal boxes for a book report project. Dear Room Seven Parents,
CLASSROOM PHILOSOPHY
In room 7 we believe the best learning environments for young children are those that provide a rich variety of appropriate materials and experiences in a supportive atmosphere. Our goal is to increase your child’s knowledge of the world around them in order to solve problems that influence their lives. This grade is a very exciting time for your child. They become more independent and more self-confident about their ability to solve problems, read, and write. They are eager to learn more about the world around them. Our classroom philosophy will build on their natural curiosity and encourage them to explore their environment. Children’s learning should proceed naturally from their daily lives. We will build on their own understanding of the community they live in.
FIELD TRIPS Parents are encouraged to write comments on the bottom of the homework form to promote an open home-school communication.
