Week August 29-September 2

This week in my class we will be taking an in-depth look at the 5 themes of Geography: Place, Location, Region, Movement, and Human-Environmental Interaction.  We will have loads of cool classwork mini-projects, as well as a few take-home worksheets to be completed for homework.  This is going to be a great year!!!

Week September 6th-9th  

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend!!  This week in my class we will begin our closer look at the theme of geography known as Human-Environmental Interaction.  We will complete some in-class research, and early next week, we will create a poster for solution on how to make SEMS more eco-friendly!  I am excited to see the results that each student brings!

Week September 12th-16th

  We will begin our study of Africa.  This unit will begin with the physical characteristics of Africa, as well as mapping out the countries.  Have a great week!

Week September 19th-23rd

This week in my classes we will be exploring more of the geographical features within Africa.  Including: The Nile River, the Atlas Mountains, Lake Victoria, the Great Rift Valley, the Sahel, the Savanna, the Sahara Desert, and many more!  Hopefully by the end of the week we will have moved on to the ancient civilization of EGYPT.

Week September 26th - 30th

We will begin taking a closer look at the ancient civilization of Egypt this week, which includes some really interesting and fun classes.  We will create an Egyptian cartouche, map out a Pharaohs tomb, Write in hieroglyphics, and learn about the process of mummification.

Week October 3rd-7th

This week we will complete our study of the Ancient Civilizations of Northern Africa.  We will continue looking at the Kingdoms of West Africa (Ghana, Mali, Songhai), as well as the trade/economy/cultures of each civilization.

Week October 10th-14th

This week we will be diving in to the customs and traditions of African villages.  We will learn terms such as: Elders, Judges, Subsistence farming, Shifting Agriculture, and shaduf.  We will also be comparing these customs with our own in the U.S.

Week October 17th-21st

This week we will continue looking at traditional village life within Africa.  We will continue learning about Shifting Agriculture and it's affect on the environment.

Weeks of October 24th- November 4th

These weeks we will be looking at early slavery within Africa as well as the Transatlantic Slave trade and how America influenced the trends of incoming slaves from Africa.  We will also be learning about European Imperialism and the division of Africa.  My classes will create a "vintage journal letter".

Week November 7th-11th

Although this is a short week here at Southeast Middle, (Veterans Day Thursday) we will be having a jam-packed week in my classroom.  We will finish our look at African independence post-imperialism.

Week November 14th-18th

We will be taking our first look at Modern North African societies this week, with special influence on the "Maghreb", Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.

Week November 28th-December2nd

After a short week last week, because of the Thanksgiving holiday, we start this week off with some new material.  We will be learning more about West Africa, desertification, ivory trading, and important rivers within Africa.

Week December 5th-9th

This week in class we will be discussing East and South African culture, religion, climate, and geographical features.  This week we will finish up Africa.  Look for a cumulative Africa project.  We will begin SW Asia before the Winter Break!

Week of December 12th-16th

this week we will begin our look of SW Asia with special emphasis on the War on Terror and ancient civilizations.

January 2012: Continued look at Dubai, Middle East, and War on Terror.
