GREETINGS ! ! !

As I am sure you are aware, your child has recently acquired a new social studies teacher.  My name is Mark Stewart, and I took over the 7th grade social studies position from Mr. Eberhardt.  I have planned a thrilling and eventful school year with my classes.  We will be incorporating projects, groupwork, and other curriculum appropriate activities.

Please let me know if you have questions/comments/concerns.  My email and voicemail are now active.  Thank you !!  I am looking forward to meeting you all !!!

This week, Oct.26-30, my classes are researching African countries with the NCJourneys textbook as well as the class almanac.  They will be using this information (per capita gdp, life expectancy, literacy rate) to combine what they have learned about weather and climate in Science class.  Both Mustang and Cadillac teams have some great ideas to have the students incorporate what they know across other subject areas.  I will keep you posted on our progress!!  Thank You!!

Week Nov.2-6

My students will be learning more about the origins and the significance of the transatlantic slave trade, slave ships and also the growth of European imperialism in Africa.  We will be completing a "written letter" project, which includes a rough draft and a final copy.  Thanks.

Week Nov. 9-13

Veterans Day: Nov.11 - NO SCHOOL
During this week, my students will complete their studies of European imperialism and the independence of African nations.  The test on this information will be Tues. or Thurs. depending on block.  Students should remember to study over all notes, fact-followups, "talk-about-its", vocabulary worksheets, and journal entries.  I am looking forward to the next section of our curriculum, where we will take an in-depth look at modern day Northern Africa. Thanks.

Week Nov. 16-20

*REMINDER* All students need to return the permission form for the field trip on November 23rd (Movie: A Christmas Carol).  Fee is $3.

This week my classes will be on an A-B schedule so that they can complete a project and watch a movie in Science class.  In Social Studies, we will be taking an in-depth look at modern day North Africa, including the countries: Egypt, Morocco, Libya, and Tunisia.  We will be completing text work, vocabulary foldables, and a "create your own African country" project.  Quiz on lessons 1&2 vocabulary on Friday the 20th.

Week of Nov. 23rd & 24th

This will be a very short week, due to the 7th grade Field Trip to see the new "Christmas Carol" movie on Monday, and also the Early Release Day on Tuesday to begin the Thanksgiving Holiday break.  Reminder**** Tuesday is Street Clothes Day, where your child can bring $1 dollar to school and be able to wear non-uniform clothing. (RSSS Dress code still applies!)

Week of Nov.30th-Dec.4th

This week in my class we will be finishing up our read aloud and notes on Northern African society.  The students will use this information to "Create-a-Test" based on their knowledge of N. Africa.  They will be pairing up and completing this project by Thursday.  I have let each class know that Progress Reports are being issued next week, and that chances to improve grades until then are becoming slim.  Help keep your child on task and focused.  December is here and Winter Break is just around the corner! Thank you for all your help and support!!!

Week of Dec.7th-11th

This week my class and I will be taking a defined look at modern day Central (rain forests), West (Sahel), and East Africa (Savanna/Grasslands/Madagascar).  There will be loads of group reading in my class, and some vocabulary work (terms/foldables).  Next week I have setup a few days in the computer lab, so that my classes can work on an Africa project.  I am very excited and anxious to see the results for this assessment.  Progress Reports will go home on Wednesday.  Have a great week!!!

Week of Dec.14-18

This week in class, we will be working on a project in the computer lab, which includes creating a research page, and a project topic, while using their creative minds!!!  There will be the Chapter 8&9 Test this Friday, with a review day on Wednesday and Thursday.  Have a great week!!!

Week of Dec. 21st & 22nd

This is a very short week here at SEMS.  My classes will turn in their final draft of the Africa Project, and we will complete all of the missing or incomplete Tests.  There will also be an 8th grade chorus and band concert on Monday the 21st.  Have a great winter break!!!

Week of January 5th-8th

Welcome back students!!!  I hope that your holiday break was productive and full of fun!  My students and I will complete the remaining areas within Africa, and we will have a comprehensive Africa Exam at the end of this week.  I am very excited, and am looking forward to our next area within the curriculum (Asia/Australia).  Let me know if you have any comments/concerns.

EXCITING NEWS!!!!

My classroom has also recently acquired a Promethean Board.  This technology aid will help students comprehension with sounds, video, internet, and other interesting/interactive methods!!!

Week of Jan. 11-15

This week we will begin the continent of Asia.  Particularly Southwest asia and the 3 subregions associated with this area.  This include the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Northern Tier.  Students will have crosswords, class reading, notes on new interactive Promethean board, and short writing assignments for comprehension.

Week of Jan. 19th & 20th

This is a very short week for us at Southeast.  We have no school on Monday, Thursday, and Friday.  In my classes we will have a review day on Tuesday and an EOG-style test on Wednesday.  This will help that students become prepared with the EOG format and atmosphere.

*NEWS*
I am going to be the Boys Tennis Coach this year, and signups are currently on my door.  We will have tryouts early in February.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

Week of Jan. 25th-29th

Well, this week started off strange with the warmer weather and severe floods.  Because of the raining/floods we will not have school on Monday.  As for the rest of the week we will be taking a deeper look into SW Asia.  Specifically on the history of the Sumerians, Phoenicians, Code of Hammurabi, and the emergence of Islam in Asia.
