Mrs. Farran's Intensive Reading

                 QUARTER   2

                    NEWS

SUPPLIES: This is a good time to resupply students with pencils/erasers, and loose leaf paper.

BOOK A- BLOCK 1-2 CLASS INFORMATION

During this quarter, students will be focusing on increasing their words per minute fluency rates.

As we begin Unit 4, students will be introduced to the functions of adverbs and prefixes. Within this unit, students will be exposed to several vocabulary words that have multiple meanings. Students will be using context clues to uncover unfamiliar word meanings. Our students will continue to concentrate on learning to recognize their parts of speech such as subjects, predicates and direct objects including diagramming their sentences!

Story Themes center around "Twins".  We will read and explore  "Remarkable Twins"; "Conjoined Twins;" "Twin Towers," and a Science informational story about "Gemini, The Twins." Both listening and writing tasks will be focusing on comprehension skills of identifying main idea, topic and sub topics with supporting details.

Book C- Block 3-4 and Block 6-7

Students have just finished up the unit on Mythical Heroes and learned about their traits. Students will continue to practice their syllabication rules, identify prefixes and suffixes, and work with adjectives, prepositional phrases and will diagram sentences with objects of the prepositions.

Upcoming unit themes include reading about about "A Special Kind of Athlete" and all about "Tony Hawk, An Extreme Athlete."

Students will be developing comprehension skills that include comparisons, facts and opinions, main idea and details, and paraphrasing ideas.

Students will continue to expand informational writing using  topic and concluding sentences in creating short summaries.
