5/25/12

There will be a JV boys basketball meeting on Sunday, May 27th at 10am in the elementary gym.  This will include players and their parents.

Graduation will take place on Sunday, May 27th at 2:00pm in the high school gymnasium.

6th-11th grade exams will be on Friday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Last day of school - Wednesday, May 30th, students will be dismissed at 12:30.  Please make every effort to have your student here for exams to avoid coming in after Wednesday to take them. 

Report cards will be sent in the mail the week of June 4th.  Students with any overdue lunch money or library books will not receive their report card.  A letter will be sent home in the mail with the cost of overdue lunch money and/or library books.  If this has already been taken care of, disregard the letter.  A list of overdue library books is posted on the bulletin board across from the high school office. 

Driver Training Segment One starts August 7th from 12-2pm and will run approximately 3-4 weeks.  The sign up sheet is located on the bulletin board across from the high school office.

All unclaimed lost and found items will be brought to the Nifty Thrift at the end of the week.  Boxes are located in the hallway across from the high school office.

High School track will leave at 12:15 today for Mid-Pen.  They will be dismissed for lunch at the regular time and will not report to their 5th hour class.

There will be a meeting in the gym on Thursday at 7:45am for all boys playing Varsity Basketball next school year.

Reminder to all juniors who signed up for internships:  If you received a letter for an interview, please stop in the high school office prior to 1st hour tomorrow to receive your pass with your interview time.  Dress like you would if you were going to a job interview.

Any students interested in being an umpire for minor/major league baseball, please sign up in the high school office.  The pay will be $15 behind the plate or $10 outfield.

There will be a mandatory Science Olympiad Meeting Wednesday after school for all team members.

The Science Olympiad team will leave Thursday to compete in the state competition on April 28th at MSU.

The bus for the Middle School Track Meet today in Rapid River will leave at 2:45.  Meet time is scheduled for 4:00.

The bus for the High School Track Meet tomorrow will leave at 2:45 for a 4:00 meet in Rapid River.

9th-12th grade students with a current semester GPA of 3.6 or higher will attend a tour of Neenah Paper tomorrow for Excellence in Education week.  The bus will leave the school at 8:15 and return after the tour and a luncheon with Munising.  Upon arrival back at the school, students are to report to their designated class period.  NO OPEN TOED SHOES ARE TO BE WORN ON THE TOUR OF NEENAH PAPER.

The Dome Track Meet will take place tomorrow at the Superior Dome.  Meet time is schedule for 1:00.  Students will leave the school at 11:00am.

There is a basketball meeting at noon today in the high school copy room for all 8-12 grade girls interested in playing high school basketball next school year.

Science Olympiad Members-turn in your permission slip, medical form, and outstanding money this week.  All forms and money need to be turned in before the trip to Lansing next Thursday, the 26th.

The National Honor Society will be doing recycling on Saturday, April 21st at the MSU Environmental Station/State Farm from 8-10am.  People can drop off paper, cardboard, and CLEAN &
SEPARATED 1 and 2 recyclable plastics. 
There will also be a cleaner exchange.  Bring in your commercial cleaners and exchange them for a green cleaner!

All Middle School and High School students who are participating in the Rock-a-thon, please meet in Mrs. Carlson’s room during your lunch time on Thursday. We will be answering any questions and tying uploose ends.  She will be there for both lunch periods.

The Superior Central National Honor Society will be holding a can drive.  They will be competing against the Munising National Honor Society to collect the most cans.  Proceeds will go towards Alger County Wrap Around, a program that helps Alger County families in need.  Cans will be collected at Superior Central on Friday, March 23rd from 3:30-4:30 by the small garage.  They will also be collected on Saturday, March 24th from 10-1 at the Chatham Co-op.  The team that collects the most cans will receive a pizza party.

The Cougar girls will play Crystal Falls Forest Park tonight in Kingsford at 6:00 EST.  The players bus will leave at 2:15.  A fan bus will leave the school at 3:15.  There must be a minimum of 25 people for the fan bus to go.  You must be signed up by noon today.  Cost is $10:  $5 to ride the bus and $5 for your game ticket.

Correction to Honor Roll:  Students passing all classes and an overall 3.0 average with no grade below a "C" will qualify for honor roll.  There was a misprint last week in schoolnotes when it was posted as a "C" or lower.  It should have read lower than a C (beginning with C-).  Our grading system did figure all honor rolls with C- or lower so there should be no mistakes.

The 2011-2012 teams are off to a great start. We have many hard working, responsible, fun returning students and a lot of exciting new students.

Keep the following information in mind:

·       The team meets every Wednesday after school for practices until 6 pm. Students may come and go as needed. If a student cannot attend Wednesday practices, he or she needs to schedule individualized practices with coaches and team members at a different time.

·       Students were given initial event assignments only. The complete event schedule should be out after the Thanksgiving break.

·       All families,please contribute snacks to have on hand for practices.

·       The cost to compete at the regional tournament is $20.00. Please send the money in with your child if you haven't already.

·       There will be team meetings every Tuesday during lunch. 6-8th grade students at11:10 in Mrs. Menhennick’s room. 9-12th grade students at 12:10pm in Mr. Bliss’s room.

Homecoming is Saturday, Oct. 15th.  Powderpuff football begins at 10am.  A free tailgate party will be held by Peoples State Bank from 1-3pm.  Hotdogs, chips, pop and water will be served.  The Superior Central JV football team will play Engadine at noon and the varsity teams will play at 3:00.  The homecoming king and queen will be announced during halftime of the varsity game.  There will be a homecoming dance from 7:30-11:00pm in the elementary gym.  The dance is for 9th-12th grade.  Cost is $10/couple or $6/single.  Pictures from 8 – 9 by Mrs. Culter; Semi-formal (no jeans or t-shirts).

Teens Needed for Alger County Youth Conservation Council

Are you interested in helping to solve environmental issues in Alger County?  Superior Corners 4-HClub has received a $1,000 Dow Chemical County 4-H Youth Conservation Council Grant and is looking for Alger County teens, ages 13-19 to serve on the council. You do not need to be a current 4-H member to join the Alger County YCC.  Youth Conservation Council members will learn about local environmental issues and work to solve a selected problem through public education, influencing public policy in their county,city or township governments, or other means.  Meetings will be held in Chatham and Munising twice each month through April 2012.  A training session is planned for Saturday, November 5th. If you have any questions, please all Barb Trombley at 892-8000 or439-1551.  To join, add your name to the sign up sheet in the High School office.

NMU will host a College Fair on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 in the jacobetti Center on the NMU Campus.  The program will be held from 6:00pm-7:30pm and is open to all high school juniors, seniors and their parents.

UP 200/Midnight Run

The Midnight Run and UP 200 will begin in Marquette on February 17th 2012. A checkpoint will be hosted at the MSU Facility south of Chatham that evening.

An organizational meeting will be held at the MSU Facility this coming Monday the 12 of September at 7PM. The Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association welcomes any organization or individual interested in the success of the race to attend a meeting Monday September 12th at 7PM. The meeting will take place at the office building at MSU.

Opportunities for groups or organizations to sell food and or refreshments to mushers, spectators and volunteers are welcomed.Individuals looking to help make the Chatham Checkpoint successful are also encouraged to attend. U.P.S.D.A. Board Members will be available to answer questions.

We welcome anyone with interest in the sport of dog sled racing or dogs in general or just to have a fun evening, to attend next week’s meeting. This is a great opportunity to meet some of the mushers and help in the success of the Chatham Checkpoint.

There will be a sign up in the high school for students that are interested in volunteering and are planning on attending the meeting.

The Middle School/High School open house is scheduled for Thursday, September 1st from 5:30pm-7:00pm.  7th-12th grade students can pick up their locker combinations and schedules in the high school office.  Mrs. Morris will be handing out 6th grade schedules and locker assignments in the library.

High School Track Meet today at Mid-Pen.  The bus will leave at 12:30.  Meet time is scheduled for 1:30.

Tomorrow is Excellence in Education Day.  Students in grades 9th - 12th grade that achieved a 3.6 gpa or higher for the 1st semester will attend a tour of Neenah Paper and Timber Products along with Munising students.  They will leave the school at approximately 8:15 and should return around 1:15 where they will then attend the dress rehearsal for the junior play.

The Senior Banquet is scheduled for Thursday, May 5th at the Trenary Community Building at 6:00pm.

The Junior play, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, is scheduled for 7:30pm on Thursday, May 5th in the High School Gym.  They public is welcome.

The Superior Central High School and Middle School Science Olympiad teams competed at the State Science Olympiad tournament Saturday in Lansing. Forty-eight high school and forty-eight middle school teams, classes A though D, participated. The high school team placed 34th, and the middle school team placed 28th. These were the best scores amongst the Upper Peninsula teams competing.

High school members, Maranda Charlebois and Oren Kriegel earned a 3rd place medal in Ecology.

CONGRATULATIONS to our Cougar boys for defeating Cedarville last night in the Quarterfinals.  They will take on Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian in the semi-finals on Thursday, March 24th at the Breslin Center at 6:00 pm.

The boys will be leaving the school today by Charter bus at 11:00am.  Students can be released at 10:45 to cheer on the team as they leave.

Vouchers were only sold until 9am this morning.  Tickets can be purchased at the Breslin Center.

SUPERIOR CENTRAL IS SOLD OUT OF DISTRICT FINAL TICKETS FOR TONIGHTS GAME IN ENGADINE.

The fan bus will leave today at 4:45.  Students that did not buy game tickets yesterday are responsible for buying their own in Engadine.  The office will collect the $5.00 for the bus.

Superior Central will play Engadine tonight at Engadine in the District Semi-Final at 6:00pm.  There will NOT be a fan bus due to lack of interest.  However, if they win tonight, we will again try and run a fan bus for the District final on Friday in Engadine at 7:00pm.

We will be offering a fan bus for Wednesdays game.  A sign-up sheet is available in the HS Office.  The cost is $5.00 to ride the bus and $5.00 for your game ticket.  Money and permission slips MUST be turned in by noon on Wednesday to the HS Office. 

If Superior Central wins on Wednesday, there will be another fan bus for Fridays game.

Superior Central will play Big Bay De Noc at 6:00 tonight in the District semi finals here at Superior Central.  Munising will play Rapid River at 7:45.  Spectators must pay prior to each game.  The gym will be cleared between games.  The winner of each game will play Friday, March 2nd at 7:00.

All freshman will be leaving at noon today to go to Valley Spur for snowshoeing and cross country skiing.  They will be dismissed at 11:30 for lunch.

Youth In Government DOT fundraiser money is due today.  There will be a meeting after school today and also after school Monday and Tuesday of next week.

The District Band Festival will be held at Engadine on Friday, February 25th.  High School students will leave the school at 7:30am and will arrive back at the school at 3:15pm.  Middle School students will leave the school at 11:30am and arrive back at 7:15pm.  The HS performance will be at 10:30am and the MS performance will be at 2:50pm.

The High School Science Olympiad Team placed 1st in the the regional competition.

The Middle School Team placed second, missing first place by one point.

Both teams will travel to Lansing to compete in the State Science Olympiad Tournament on April 30th.

 

Tuesday, February 22, all juniors will fill out all the necessary forms for the MME which is next week, March, 1,2,&3.

They should all meet in the library at 8:00 AM and plan to be there into second hour depending on how long the prep takes.

Congrats!  Nine members entered the Solo & Ensemble this past weekend.  They traveled to Pickford and all nine band members medaled.  Osana Fink, Hailey Lintula, Ally Bray. Current college students will be in the library today at 2:22 to meet with all seniors.  They will discuss current college classes and what seniors should be prepared for as they head to college. 

Senior Group Photo will be taken at the Ice Caves nearby on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011.  We will meet in front of the high school at 9:00 a.m. and board the school bus.  We will be back at the school at 11:00 a.m. in time for fourth hour.  Be sure to bring clothes to change in to as you may get wet.  Also, wear appropriate clothing for winter walking.  I understand the walk is about ½ of a mile and a bit downward to the caves.

SCHOOLS OF CHOICE APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE

Superior Central School announces that Schools of Choice applications are now available for the second semester of the 2010-11 school year.  Applications will be accepted now until Monday, January 17, 2011.  The Schools of Choice date for enrollment shall be no later than Friday, January 21, 2011.

Information regarding grades, schools, and special programs for which applications will be accepted is currently available in the Superintendent’s Office.  Please call 439-5531 with questions.

Boys basketball game at Rapid River tonight.  The bus will leave at 4:15.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00.

Congratulations to the wrestlers on their first place finish at the Rudyard “Bridge Brawl”.  The team finished with 117 team points edging out Newberry, Rudyard, Manistique, and St. Ignace on the day.  Scoring 27 teams points and finishing 5-0 on the day was Tim Steward.  Three other cougars added 12 points each in Marcos Aleman, Ali Rittenger, and Mark Torongo.  The wrestlers will be in action tomorrow night at Manistique.

The Elementary Christmas Program will take place  tomorrow, December 16th at 6:30pm in the HS gym.  Santa Claus will be here after the program.  As a fundraiser for our library, students and their siblings will be able to get their picture taken with Santa for $5.00. He will also be handing out bags of candy.

 

The book fair will be open before and after the Christmas Program and is open daily during school until Friday, December 17th. 

 

Mrs. Bixby's Leading and Learning class is holding a can drive.  Students, staff and the public are welcome to bring in non-parishable food items.  There are boxes placed in each classroom. Items can be brought in until Monday, December 20th.  The class with the most items will get an ice cream party.  So far the class with the most items is the 8th  grade with only 4 items.  Students, staff and parents please bring in items to help our local needy.

Congratulations to Mark Torongo on his 4-1 finish this past weekend at the Ken Graber Super Duals in Munising.  Mark led the team with four pins for victories and propelled his team to a 29-18 victory over the Gwinn Modeltowners in dual action.  Other Superior Central Cougars with wins on the day include Tim Steward who was also 4-1, and Ali Rittenger notched her second varsity victory for the new season.

 

The wrestlers will be in action on Wednesday night at Sault St. Marie where they will battle the Sault Blue Devils and Newberry Indians.

There will be a Middle School dance on Friday, November 12th from 7-11 in the elementary gym.  The cost is $5 per person.  There will be freshments and snacks available for $.50.  There has been some confusion about dress.  Semi-formal or formal dress is not required.  Casual dress is acceptable.  Mr. Trombley will be doing photos.  The cost ranges from $4-$6.  Cash please.

After the dance, the 7th grade girls basketball team will be having an overnight lock-in at the school.  Parents are asked to  be here by 8am on Saturday to pick up their child.  Permission slips to sleep over MUST be brought with your child to the dance.

Today is "Mix it up" day.  Students are encouraged to sit with somebody different at lunch today.  Someone they wouldn't normally sit with.  There will be activities going on in the gym during lunch.  Faculty and Staff are also encouraged to attend and take part in "mix it up" day.

The Graduation ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 30th at 2:00 in the High School gymnasium.

Report cards will be sent out on Thursday, June 3rd.  Students that owe lunch money, have overdue library books or still have uniforms that need to be turned in, will not receive their report cards.  Please take care of these issues ASAP.

Piles of clothes, shoes, etc. were found in lockerrooms and lockers.  We also have a box in the High School Office.  If you think anything belongs to you, it MUST be picked up by Tuesday, June 1st.  We will be bringing all remaining items to the Nifty Thrifty on Wednesday, June 2nd.
