Welcome to the Shark Team

The Shark Team will be available for tutoring every Tuesday from 2:30 to 3:30.  Different teachers from the team will stay each week.  However, if you need extra help on a specific topic just ask and I will try to be available.  Remember to arrange transportation before you come to school.

All students can use Study Island.com for an unlimited number of review problems that correlate to our Standard Course of Study.  You can write down or print out problems that you don't understand and bring to tutoring on Tuesday for an explanation. Study Island will be available until the end of the year.

We will continue to practice the 12 Powerful Words and their definitions.  Our team wants everyone to earn the blue, yellow, and white bracelets.

Conference times are flexible, but planning time is
9:00 - 10:30 am.  Please call or
e-mail to schedule a conference to avoid other meetings.

Second Semester Course Content for Algebra:

Objectives from the NC Standard Course of Study
    ~Matrices
    ~Misleading Graphs and Statistics
    ~Scatter Plots and Lines of Best Fit
    ~Operations with Polynomials
    ~Factoring
    ~Perimeter, Area, Volume, Surface Area & Changing Dimensions
    ~Dilations
    ~Pythagorean Theorem
    ~Quadratic Equations & Inequalities
    ~Exponential Functions
    ~On-going review of topics from first semester

Journals
    Each week students are expected to complete the journal question in the designed notebook.  On Fridays, students exchange journals and grade the work of a classmate using the rubric.  The journal grades are averaged at the end of the quarter and count as a test grade.

Grading Policy
    Class participation   30%
    Tests                      25%
    Quizzes                  20%
    Opening Activities  15%
    Homework             10%

Homework
    Each student checks his/her homework during class.  The teacher will stamp the Homework Record Sheet after reviewing the student work.  At the end of the quarter, students submit their record sheet to determine their homework average for the quarter.

Student-led Conferences will be held during the third nine weeks.

True learning involves "figuring out how to use what you already know in order to go beyond what you already think."
--Jerome Bruner

A primary focus throughout the entire year will be implementing the best problem solving strategies for each written problem. Below is a list of the most often used strategies. Think of others to add to our list.
* Re-read the problem
* Draw a picture
* Make a chart
* Solve a simpler problem
* Underline the key information
* What is the question I need to answer?
* Guess and check
* Eliminate wrong answer choices
* Answer ALL multiple-choice questions
* Write down all the steps - Don't try to do too many calculations in your head!
* Estimate then calculate
* Use the calculator to avoid mistakes adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing numbers
* Use extra paper to work the problems if too little space is provided. Leave plenty of room between problems and remember to write the number neatly.
* Did I answer the question?
* Does the answer seem reasonable?

The 8th grade North Carolina Standard Course of study is available at www.learnnc.org. This an abbreviated list of goals and the percent of the EOG that will come from that goal.

Goal 1: Numeration (10-15%)
  • Be able to use rational and irrational numbers
  • Use a variety of problem-solving strategies as well as estimate
Goal 2: Measurement (10-15%)
  • Determine the effect on perimeter, area, or volume when one or more dimensions are changed
  • Use indirect measurement (set up proportions to find the missing measurement on similar figures)
Goal 3: Geometry (10-15%)
  • Represent problems with geometric models
  • Apply geometric properties especially Pythagorean Theorem (right triangles only)
  • Identify, predict, and describe dilations
Goal 4: Data Analysis and Probability (20-25%)
  • Collect, organize, and display data to solve problems (including scatterplots)
  • Line of best fit or regression
  • Explain correlation
  • Identify misuses of statistical data
Goal 5: Algebra (35-40%)
  • Functions
  • Identify linear and non-linear equations
  • Find slope and intercepts
  • Explain meaning of equation
  • Write a linear equation when given 2 points
  • Write a linear equation when given the slope and one point on the line
  • Write a linear equation when given the slope and y-intercept
  • Solve problems using linear equations and inequalities
  • Properties - Communtative, Associative, Distributive
  • Square and square roots
  • Cubes and cube roots

My vision is to inspire all students to improve their critical thinking skills and develop strategies for solving verbal math problems; set ambitious goals for personal success; become responsible for their learning; live a healthy lifestyle; become ethical and democratic citizens; and become life-long learners!

3 Basic Expectations
(1) Be Respectful!
(2) Be Responsible!
(3) Be Ready to Learn!
