Kinderbee News from Our Hive

(June 1st-9th))

I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend, and get to enjoy some time spent with family and friends. We are having such a good time together as we wind down this school year.  I cannot believe that we have finished our last full week of school.  Four days next week, and two and a half the week after that.  Wow, how this year has flown. I have been blessed by each of you and your precious children in so many ways. I've said this before, but I want to say it again.  It has been an honor and a priveledge to partner with you all this year in educating your children. I love each one of them dearly.  Thank you for entrusting your babies to me each day!  I am thankful to God for calling me to teach at PCA, and I'm thankful that He placed YOUR children in my care.

As the Bible states in Ecclesiastes 3:1, "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven."

As this season comes to an end, I want you all to know that I am proud of all they have accomplished. I've seen them grow in so many ways:  physically, academically, socially, and spiritually. What an incredible job the children have done.  They are ready for First grade, and they are ready for summer! Please know I pray over these children and with these children every day.  I will continue to pray for them, and you all.  Have a safe and blessed summer!

Here's what we'll be up to this next week:

Bible

Lesson #35:  Learning From God's Word

Scripture Text:  1 and 2 Timothy

Target Truths

1. God wants us to learn the truths of the Word from the time we are very young so we can grow up to be godly Christians.

2.  Timothy was a godly man who desired to serve God all the days of his life.

3.  Two of the books of the Bible were written by Paul to Timothy.

Memory Verse:

Please review 1Corinthians 15:3b-4: Ephesians 4:25a; Acts 16:31b and Mark 16:15b.  As your children review and quote each verse, ask them to explain what they mean and how they should make a difference in the way they live.

Math

We will finish up our Math curriculum this next week, and do lots of theme related "fun" math to finish out our year!

Language Arts

Our curriculum includes Phonemic Awareness activities, Phonics instruction, Decodable readers, Sight Word instruction, and more.

This week we'll  introduce Diagraph "oo" and review introduced diagrpahs (ck, sh, th), and review our Phonics spelling rules.

K & C Spelling Rule

Use the letter K if... the /k/ sound comes before e,i, or y

Use the letter C if...the /k/ sound comes before a, o, u, or any consonant

For example: cow (we spell cow with the letter "c" because the /k/ sound is followed by "o")

We introduced Decodable #13 last week.   Please continue to review decodable readers  at home each night. Don't forget...I'll send these decodable books home as we master them.  Your job is for you and your child to read these books together each night!  I can't wait for you all to hear your children reading these books...you are going to be so proud!

Words to Practice (updated 3/22/10)

the (not thee)        one         do        what      of

at                     two         my        when     who

a                      into         said       you      from

I                      four        was       are       come

am                    have        eight     have

Please take time to review the Reading Lists with your child each night until the words are mastered (mastered means your child can look at them and read them without having to sound them out--they can just say the word without hesitation).  Once those words are mastered, then return the list to me.  Thank you in advance for helping your child become a great reader!  Please let me encourage each of you to make reviewing these reading lists a part of your routine each night.  Thank you in advance for your support!

Don't forget, our Language Arts block also includes:

-  poetry lesson (Kinderbees!)

**  Our Poetry journals will go home every Friday.  Please don't forget to send it back to school on Monday.

-  handwriting instruction

-  shared reading (The Rainbow Fish)

-  literacy work stations (these are hands on, skill-building work jobs, games      and  activities)

-  creative movement that teaches and reinforces target literacy skills

-  Big book practice

-  Decodable Reader instruction (#13)

-  and more!

We spend lots of time on Language Arts each day.  Just wait and see what your child will be able to do as our year progresses.  You're going to be pleased...I just know it!

We will also be working on:

-  sight word matching activities

-  rhyming games

-  word building activities

HERITAGE STUDIES/SCIENCE

We learn about Heritage Studies and Science through "units of study".  All units are taught from a Biblical world view, highlighting God's perfect design to our world, and all things in it.

We're wrapping up our year going "Under the Sea"...learning all about the creatures God put in our oceans and seas.  We're having so much fun!

The Buzz...

1. Monday, May 31st:  Memorial Day/Holiday.  No school for students and teachers

2.  Saturday, June 5th:  School Play @ 7 p.m.  Come support our Drama Team that evening as they perform Alice In Wonderland.  You will be entertained!

3.  Tuesday, June 8th: Our "Jump Into Summer" end of the year celebration at Jump Zone!  We will leave school @ 10:10, and return back to school at 1 :00 p.m.

4.  Tuesday, June 8th:  Closing Program for K-5th Grade @ 7 p.m.

7.  Wednesday, June 9th:  Last Day of School for Students, Combined Closing Awards Chapel @ 8:30, NOON DISMISSAL

8.  June 16th:  Report Cards Mailed Home

Chapel is on Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m.  The children are required to wear their chapel uniform (green Pinewood logo shirt and khaki bottoms) on chapel days.  The green Pinewood logo shirts and sweatshirts went home on Friday.  Everyone should now have one, so please remember to wear it on Chapel day.   Parents are always invited to attend.  Please sign in at the office, get your visitor's badge, and meet us in the Sanctuary!

6.   Please send a water bottle filled with water (and labeled with your child's name) every day.  All that learning makes us thirsty.  We don't have a water fountain in our room.  The water fountain down the hall is very tall and we are all little, so our shirts get soaked when we try to drink out of it!

7.  DON'T FORGET...Anyone having ANY contact with the children MUST be Covenant Care trained.  This includes field trips.  I always recommend that BOTH parents get trained.

** Training lasts about an hour.  Please call the school office if you have any questions about Covenant Care training.

8.  Be sure to look at the websites and Kindergarten games that I've attached to the bottom of these notes!  All of these sites are safe for the children, plus there are great educational games to reinforce skills your children are learning in class.  Check 'em out!

Classroom Wish list (No Obligation, NO Pressure!)

You guys came through in a big way!  We have everything we need at this time.

Thanks everbody for helping us out!

Our class greatly appreciates your support!

Please keep the children and me in your prayers each day. If you ever have comments, questions and/or concerns, please feel free to contact  me.  Remember, we're in this together as partners for the children.  God bless you all!

In Christ,

Mrs. Terhune
