KA NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 6-10, 2012 LANGUAGE ARTS: We will be working on the letter N book this week. As you can see from our stories, new words are mounting up. Daily reading practice will help your child keep up and not fall behind. Please try to find 15 minutes a day to have your child read to you or to a sibling. We will work with counting syllables and sounding out words with more than one syllable. NEW ONCE A WEEK READING ASSIGNMENT: To help prepare us become smooth readers, I am asking each student once a week to bring home a short sight word book to read to a parent. If the reading book bag comes home with your child, please listen to him or her read the story 3 times. Then, sign on the line next to the appropriate night and return book, book bag, and signed note the next day. We want to have superstar readers ready for first grade!!! MATH: We will begin to work with subtraction using manipulatives. When adding we count up so for subtraction we are counting down. If your child is having difficulty with subtraction, try making a number line to ten and jumping backwards to solve the problems. RELIGION: This week we will demonstrate ways we listen to Jesus. Mass on Wednesday at 9 o'clock. SOCIAL STUDIES: We will continue our discussion on Presidents this week during centers. The students will make Lincoln's log cabin and work on a penny flip tally. HOMEWORK JOURNAL: Please have your child write 2 sentences about what they would do if they were President. Don't forget the illustrations! SHARE BAG: Since we are becoming such great readers the share bag has turned into share a story bag! Please have your child select a very short story to read to the class when he or she brings home the share bag. Please make sure your child can independently read the story and make sure the length of the story is short due to the short attention span of the audience! Thanks! REMINDERS: Valentine's Day is next Tuesday, February 14th. We have 22 students in our class. The class list is on the back of this page. Please make sure your child brings a card for each student and for their buddy. Thank you!! We will deliver our Valentine mail on Valentine's Day. The students do not need to bring a box or bag to collect the cards. We decorated a bag at school.
The Doodle4Google event for 2012 has begun. Our SJNRCS artists have been very successful in the contest, in fact; we have had two State of Georgia winners in the 4 years we have participated.
This year the winner will be awarded a $30,000 college scholarship, a trip to New York for an event on May 17, 2012, a Google Chromebook computer, a Wacom digital design tablet and a t-shirt printed with his or her doodle on it. The winning logo will also be featured on the Crayola 64 box and the Google site. The winner's school will receive a $50,000 technology grant towards the improvement of the technology program.
