Week of February 1 - Beginning of 3rd Quarter English - During the first four weeks of this quarter, students will be asked to read a biography. For an A+ they should read at least 300 pages; for a B they should read at least 200 pages. This week: students will begin a 3-week writing unit in which they will write on topics of their choice each day. They will be required to write in a variety of genre and complete 6 pieces of writing by February 25. Parents can be helpful by discussing possible writing topics with the student and encouraging students to do some writing at home. Students will be required to apply all writing skills learned this year. They will be completing a book of writing by the end of the year. Week of January 25 -28: no school Friday Reminder: all students must read a book from my reading list this quarter. This is due Jan 28. Students in blocks A and D must read one classic this semester from my list. English - Monday and Tuesday: using commas in complex sentences. Review all comma usage. Wednesday: Quiz on commas and related terms: appositive, participles, compound/complex sentences, coordinate/subordinate conjunctions, dependent/independent clause. Thursday: Introduce third quarter writing unit. Week of January 18 - 22: Reminder: all students must read a book from my reading list this quarter. This is due Jan 28. Students in blocks A and D must read one classic this semester from my list. English - Monday (half day): finish discussing the 15 comma rules. Tuesday: work on writing sentences using commas correctly. Wednesday: Career Day in the morning. More work on commas in compound and complex sentences, appositives, and participial phrases Thursday: Commas again. Friday: Quiz on comma usage. Week of January 11 - 15: Reminder: all students must read a book from my reading list this quarter. This is due Jan 28. Students in blocks A and D must read one classic this semester from my list. English - Monday: We will discuss the film, Swing Kids. After the discussion students will write a short essay describing Peter's conflict and how he resolves this conflict. Tuesday: Vocabulary lesson on the roots mal (bad) and bene (good). Spelling quiz to qualify for district spelling bee. Wednesday - SRI reading test in computer lab. Thursday: Begin lessons on using commas in their writing. Today they will begin a review lesson on all the comma rules. Friday: Explanation of comma rules. Students will apply these rules to sentences they write. Week of January 4 - 8: English: This week students will be viewing the video, Swing Kids, the story of German teenagers during WWII. Students will write a journal entry each day after viewing the video. The purpose of the entry will be to express the internal conflict of the main character, Peter. One activity forbidden by Hitler was to listen to American Swing music, especially music written or performed by Jewish and African-American musicians. Peter was one of the German Swing Kids who met secretly in clubs to dance to this music. Throughout the story Peter also learns more about why his father died and why he risked his life to help his Jewish colleagues who were "fired" from their university jobs. Week of Dec. 14-19: English: Monday: Finish discussing the material in the Anne Frank packet. Each student will create a vocabulary quiz based on the vocab in The Diary of Anne Frank. Tuesday: Students who need extra credit may write a characterization paper on Anne Frank. This will be due on Friday. Wednesday: Short review. Finish Anne Frank video. Thursday: Quiz on The Diary of Anne Frank. Read "A Tragedy Revealed." This tells about the rest of Anne Frank's life. Friday: Discuss "A Tragedy Revealed." Week of November 30 - Dec. 4: English: Each day we do SSR for 15 minutes. If a student is absent, he or she must make up this reading at home. A parent should sign a note confirming this. Monday: Read Act I, Scene 2 of the Diary of Anne Frank. Make up two questions on this scene to ask others in the class. Be prepared for a quiz. Tuesday: Read Act I, Scene 3, aloud in class. Parts will be assigned. Complete the parts in the Anne Frank packet that apply to scenes 1 - 3. Wednesday: Read Scenes 4 and 5. Answer questions. Thursday: Discuss scenes 4 and 5. Work on packet.
